This week we will be working on our unit challenge project. The project information and timeline is found below. 

Volcano Voyage

The purpose of this project is to create a virtual voyage to three volcanoes that are good options for your client.  Your project will include the following

• Information on the process that formed this volcano (hot spot, plate boundary etc.) and how the cycle of matter and energy is involved in this process.

• Location information for this volcano.  Is it in an area of stability or change, explain what makes it this type of area.

• Volcano Rating - What is the frequency and type of eruption for this volcano

• Client information - Why is this the best volcano for the client?  Will they need trip insurance?

• Volcano Pictures

• Eruption Video (if available)

Day 1: 

Look at examples of projects in Google Earth Voyage and fill out a survey about each project you view.  What features were included in this project?  What made this project interesting?  What features might have been done differently?

Days 2 & 3:  

Select three volcanoes as options for your client from the list provided.

Review this information with students on how to correctly give credit to sources from which you gather information.

• Students will watch a short video about the CRAAP method of evaluating resources online.  

• Using the CRAP checklist, the class will evaluate a volcano website to model the practice of evaluating sources.  

  • NOTE:  This is an example of a source that would not be a good choice.  

• Watch this video to see how to correctly cite an image or video

Gather information about each volcano from your class materials and by searching the internet.  

• Add your information, photos, and videos to the planning form.  

• Make sure to cite your sources in the document and later in your project.  

• All information should be recorded in your own words.

Day 4:  Complete the tutorial on how to make a project in Google Earth

Day 5:  Create your Google Earth Volcano Voyage

• For each volcano you must replace the information on the card with the information you researched and recorded on your planning page.  

• Add in the photos and videos to each stop on your voyage

• Include a citation for each photo or video and the information you use.

Day 6:  Peer Editing View at least two projects from other groups.  Provide feedback using the project rubric.
