Halloween week is here! Families are welcome to come and watch the Halloween parade this Thursday from 1:30 to 2:00. Parking can get pretty crazy, so I recommend that you walk if you can. Please be sure student costumes are school-appropriate and it is something that students can easily change into.
The class party will run from 12:30 to 1:30, before the parade. Only volunteers who are signed up and have a completed background check can attend.
AES is hosting a book fair next week. Our class will look on Monday and buy on Wednesday. Students should only buy books that are approved by parents from the look day. You can set up an eWallet or pay by cash/check. The eWallet link says it is for the classroom, but they will be able to tell which student owns the eWallet.
Reading log reminders!
Students should be reading 15 +/- minutes at home, as often as possible. I highly recommend at least 3-4 day of reading a week! Reading minutes should be recorded on their Solar Systemed themed reading log. By this point in the school year, students should ideally be on either the Mercury or Venus log.
This week:
Math: Multiplication & Early Division: Unit 2 test on Thursday.
Home connections pages (optional, but great for review) will be sent home Monday. We will also review in class on Wednesday.
Reading: Nonfiction study, looking at narrative nonfiction
Writing: Informational writing, editing & publishing
Word Study: Un- & Dis- prefixes
Students have been working really hard on spelling patterns the last few months! We are now focusing on a new approach to spelling that uses morphology, the study of word parts. Understanding morphemes (like prefixes, suffixes, and root words) helps us see how words are built, which improves spelling and reading comprehension far beyond rote memorization. Through this process, your student will identify and manipulate word parts. With this being said, your student will not have a “spelling list” to study at home throughout the week. Rather, they will have a weekly word study list that focuses on a specific morpheme. Students will not be taking a spelling test each Friday. They will instead complete a worksheet/quiz that assesses their understanding of word parts and their meanings. You can support your child by reviewing the weekly word study list and encouraging them to notice patterns in words, discussing how words are built, and exploring how adding a prefix or suffix can change a word’s meaning.
