Grading Practices
Grading practices will follow a standards-based framework designed to provide direct feedback regarding students’ mastery of course content.
Grading practices and guidelines will align with the outcomes of the course and New York State’s Next Generation Learning Standards.
When possible, assignment-specific rubrics will be utilized.
Grading will be cumulative. Homework assignments, written assignments, essays, projects, quizzes, and tests will each be worth a number of points. For example, shorter daily assignments may be worth ten (10) points, while longer, more detailed assignments such as essays and projects may be worth one-hundred (100) points. The more points an assignment is worth, the greater effect it will have on the student’s grade.
Grades will be the percentage of points earned by the end of the quarter.
General Homework Expectations
Homework assignments are designed to reinforce classroom learning, practice new skills, and prepare for upcoming topics.
Students are expected to complete all assignments thoughtfully and to the best of their ability.
Organization is key! Students should keep track of assignments using their planners, Google Classroom, or a designated system.
Late Work Policy
First Semester (September - February):
During the first semester, homework assignments will be accepted late.
Timely submission is encouraged, as this period allows students to develop effective study habits and learn from mistakes regarding deadlines.
However, excessive late submissions may impact participation grades and will be addressed through communication with students and guardians.
Second Semester (February - June):
Beginning with the second semester, late homework will generally NOT be accepted for credit.
This shift is intended to prepare students for the increased academic rigor and responsibility expected in higher grades.
Exceptions will only be made in cases of documented emergency or prolonged illness, and must be discussed directly with the teacher.
Absences and Missing Work
If a student is absent from school, they will have two school days from the date of their return to complete any missed homework assignments.
It is the student's responsibility to check with the teacher or a classmate to determine what assignments were missed during their absence.
For extended absences (3 or more consecutive school days), communication with the teacher is required to arrange a revised timeline for completing missed work.
Grading of Incomplete/Missing Assignments
A grade of "0" will be entered as a placeholder in the gradebook for any assignment that is missing or incomplete by the deadline.
Once the assignment is submitted and completed, the "0" placeholder will be replaced with the earned grade.
For second-semester assignments, if the work is not submitted by the deadline (unless an approved exception applies), the "0" will become the permanent grade.
