My name is Dan Hurley and I am a school psychologist at Franklin Delano Roosevelt High School in the Hyde Park Central School District. If you are wondering what school psychologists do, click here.
I am originally from Queens, but have lived in a few parts of New York State, including Plattsburgh, Syracuse, Auburn, Poughkeepsie, and Hyde Park.
I attended SUNY Plattsburgh. I initially was a nursing major, but ultimately switched to a psychology major. After earning my Bachelor's Degree, I decided to continue my education at Plattsburgh and enrolled in the school psychology graduate program. While in graduate school, I held a position as a residence hall director.
Following my coursework, I completed my school psychology internship in the Plattsburgh City School District, split between two elementary schools, the middle school, and the high school.
After leaving Plattsburgh, I moved to the Finger Lakes Region of NY for a position in the Moravia Central School District. While in Moravia, I served as the school psychologist for the middle school and high school.
In 2004, I moved to Poughkeepsie; however, this was not my first time in the area. During college and graduate school, I spent portions of my summers working at the Mid-Hudson Valley Camp, which serves children with various disabilities.
In 2004, I accepted a position in the Hyde Park Central School District. After working at Violet Avenue School and Netherwood Elementary School during the 2004-2005 school year, I moved to F.D. Roosevelt High School in September 2005. I remain at FDR today.
In addition to my regular responsibilities, I am the co-chair of the district's safety team and a member of the FDR emergency response team. I also serve as an advisor for the FDR Sources of Strength program and am a member of the FDR Positive Behavior Interventions & Supports (PBIS) committee.
In addition to working as a school psychologist, I am an adjunct instructor in the school psychology graduate program at Marist College. I have taught courses in cognitive assessment, psychoeducational services, consultation, and school crisis prevention and intervention.
I am also a trainer for the NASP PREPaRE program, a school safety and crisis preparedness curriculum. I have been trained by national experts and have subsequently trained and provided consultation to school districts and graduate students.
I am a member of the National Association of School Psychologists (NASP) and the New York Association of School Psychologists (NYASP).
I served on the board of NYASP for five years as a chapter representative for Dutchess, Ulster, Orange, Sullivan, and Greene counties.
I have been a New York State Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) for 25+ years. I am presently a volunteer and a past ambulance captain for the Roosevelt Fire District. Prior to Roosevelt FD, I had been a member of 3 other volunteer ambulance corps (as I moved around the state) and also worked a few summers during college as an EMT on an oceanfront beach on Long Island.
I live in Hyde Park with my wife (a special education teacher at Haviland Middle School) and our 3 children. I enjoy attending my kids' sporting events, cooking, the NY Mets, college basketball, and FDR basketball.
