Elements of Poetry Vocabulary
1. Poem- a collection of words written to inspire ideas, imagination, or emotion
2. Stanza- a group of lines in a poem
3. Line- a single row of words in a poem
4. rhyme- words that have the same ending sounds
5. meter- the number and style of accented syllables in a line
6. rhythm- the beat, sound and feel of a poem
7. theme- the truth, lesson, or message of the poem about life
8. mood- the feeling the poet is trying to convey
ELA Figurative Language vocabulary
1. simile- a comparison using like or as
2. metaphor- a comparison that does not use like or as
3. idiom- phrases that mean something different than what the words actually say
4. hyperbole- exaggeration
5. personification- giving objects/animals human qualities
6. proverbs- words of wisdom expressed in a simple way
7. adage- a well-known proverb used for a long time

1. caption- the words next to a picture that explain what it is about
2. photograph- a picture made with a camera that shows how things look in real life
3. heading- tells the reader what the section of the article is about
4. italic print- slanted text that identifies a new or important word
5. graph- shows information in a visual way so that it could be understood by the reader
6. Table of contents- gives the heading and beginning page number of each section in a book
7. map-a picture that shows the location of a place
8. bold print- calls attention to new words
9. illustration- a hand-drawn picture

1. Act- a large part of the play
2. antagonist- the character who causes problems for the main character
3. audience- the people watching the play
4. Cast of characters- the list of actors in the play

8. narrator- the person who explains what is happening in the play

Social Studies "Ohio's Resources" Vocabulary
1. natural resources- materials such as forests, water, land, and minerals that occur in nature and can be used by humans.
2. Ohio River- Ohio's most important river that flows more than 450 miles, separating Ohio from Kentucky and West Virginia
3. mineral resources- natural resources like coal, salt, limestone, sandstone, sand, clay, and gypsum that Ohioans use in manufacturing
4. iron ore- a natural resource Ohioans use to make iron and steel products
5. forests- natural resources Ohioans use as a source of energy and to build houses
6. farming- an important occupation in Ohio that produces crops like soybeans and corn
7. fishing- an important occupation in Ohio that helped feed our nation as it was growing
8. manufacturing- producing goods in factories for less money than making them by hand
9. transportation- roads and canals used to make travel and shipping easier
