Co-teaching pairs a special education teacher with a content area general education teacher. Together they share the responsibilities of planning, instructing, and assessing students. In the co-teaching setting teachers take on responsibilities equally and accountable for all students within the classroom. This allows a team to offer a more inclusive classroom.
Support hours are facilitated by a special education teacher these hours are designed to support students academically, socially and emotionally. Specific IEP goals are managed through during these classes. Our LESA staff, social worker, OT and speech pathologists) often work within groups with these classes. These classes may include Transitions, Freshman Focus and Tutorial 10. Also TIES
Replacement classes are classes that use the essential standards of a content area class. It is taught at a slower pace with specific IEP goals embed with in the daily lessons. These classes may include Algebra I, II, Geometry and English.
This class is to pairs a student with special needs with a partner. The partner will accompany a student to his/her class and model appropriate social, behavioral, and academic skills. Mentor students are trained throughout the school year and complete a seriers of reflective assignment and a final project. This is an application based program.
Work Readiness Appreciation Program ( WRAP) provides students with the opportunity to obtain and maintain employment through an assessment of employability skills. Through this program students have the opportunity to gain work experience prior to graduation. Michigan Rehabilitation Services (MRS) allows a year long assessment of work readiness and planning for post secondary success. This class is a 4 hour block and students are referred and selected to participate through their IEP team and MRS partnership led selection process.
The certificate program instructs in both functional academics, vocational skills, and daily living skills that will assist with life at home and in the community. Functional academics include reading, writing, mathematics, social studies and science.s Daily living skills may include personal care, social skills. employability, and work skills. Instructors collaborate with the general education teachers to address each student's unique learning needs.
Job Exploration and Training (JET) offers qualifying students an opportunity for work experiences through working and/or projects in a structured and supportive environment within the school setting.
Unified Champions Schools (UCS) is an education or school based project supported by Special Olympics that uses sports and education programs to bring together athletes with and without intellectual disabilities. HHS has both a UCS basketball team and pom pom squad that participate in the KLAA playing competitors in our conference such as Brighton and Hartland.
LESA also provides service to Howell High school through Speech and Language, Occupational Therapy, Physical Therapy and Social Work. It also specialized provides consultants in a varying disability areas.
