River Oaks Elementary is proud to be an authorized International Baccalaureate (IB) World School, offering the Primary Years Programme (PYP) to all students. Originally authorized on March 1, 2005, River Oaks recently completed a successful program evaluation and has been reauthorized by the IB Organization for an additional five years, affirming its continued commitment to high-quality, inquiry-based education.
The IB Primary Years Programme is designed for students aged 3 to 12 and emphasizes the development of the whole child as an active, lifelong learner - both in the classroom and beyond. Rooted in international-mindedness, the PYP fosters curiosity, critical thinking, and compassion through a rigorous and balanced curriculum that integrates knowledge, concepts, skills, attitudes, and action.
The program is structured around six transdisciplinary themes that promote a global perspective and real-world connections:
Who We Are
Where We Are in Place and Time
How We Express Ourselves
How the World Works
How We Organize Ourselves
Sharing the Planet
These themes provide the framework for meaningful inquiry and student agency, ensuring that learning is both relevant and impactful.
The Programme of Inquiry at River Oaks Elementary provides a cohesive framework for learning across grades K–5, connecting subject areas through six engaging, transdisciplinary themes. Each grade level explores age-appropriate central ideas that promote curiosity, critical thinking, and global awareness. This dynamic approach encourages students to make real-world connections, ask meaningful questions, and develop a deep understanding of concepts that extend beyond the classroom. Through the Programme of Inquiry, students build the foundation for lifelong learning and international-mindedness.
At River Oaks Elementary, the International Baccalaureate (IB) Programme nurtures a diverse learner profile that encourages students to become inquirers, thinkers, communicators, and caring global citizens. Through a focus on academic rigor and character development, students grow into open-minded, principled individuals who are reflective and balanced. The IB learner profile is at the heart of all teaching and learning at River Oaks, empowering students to take ownership of their education and make meaningful contributions to the world around them.
At River Oaks Elementary, teaching and learning are guided by an inquiry-based, project-driven philosophy rooted in the International Baccalaureate (IB) Programme. Students take an active role in their learning by exploring real-world questions, collaborating with peers, and engaging in meaningful projects that foster creativity and critical thinking. Teachers act as facilitators, guiding students to construct knowledge, reflect on their learning, and take action. This approach nurtures curious, compassionate, and confident learners who are empowered to make a positive impact in their communities and beyond.
