Hello, my name is Lémmis Stephens and I’m thrilled to be teaching 7th Grade English Language Arts at Lanier Middle School! I was born in Houston and raised in the Pacific Northwest. I graduated with High Honors from Sam Houston State University Honors College! I have been teaching for the past seven years in many countries around the world; This is my first year at Lanier, I am passionate in growing student's reading and writing skills and I hope that my eagerness influences our young learners to be more confident in their abilities and strike curiosity for the world around them through the pages of their books. I published my first fantasy novel "Scales the First Flight" in 2020, I love flying small planes off season, and I live with a three-year old tabby cat named Langston, who loves causing mischief.
ELA Class Overview
All Literacy classes at Lanier are organized as a Readers/Writers workshop- we will have a writing lesson and a reading lesson each day. We will always be “in” a book that we can and want to read, either independently, in groups, or as a class. In our Literacy classroom, there is a grade-level appropriate library, and we can also bring books from home, or read online books.
The Workshop is a teaching method that focuses on a student-centered learning environment. The Reader’s notebook will reflect a student’s thinking within a book through the strategies taught in class. In the Writer’s notebook, students will explore different genres of writing and create original writing pieces. The writing pieces will be very student-centered, focusing around issues and ideas that matter to the individual. At Lanier, we use the workshop classroom to focus on students as individuals in order to create a more authentic learning environment, ultimately leading our students to become self-directed, life-long readers and writers.
