Nathaniel S. Preston AU Professor
Nathaniel S. Preston, 81, a retired government professor at American
University who later became a lawyer, died Nov. 27 at Suburban Hospital
after a fall at his home. He lived at the Maplewood Park Place retirement
community in Bethesda.
Dr. Preston moved to the District in 1961 to teach government at American
University. He eventually became vice president for academic affairs but
left higher education to study law. He received his law degree in 1981 from
American University and opened an estate planning firm, Preston and Eliot,
with a friend, Lance Eliot. He retired in the mid-1990s.
Nathaniel Stone Preston was born in Boston and joined the Merchant Marine at
age 16. He helped transport bombers to Great Britain during World War II.
After the war, he attended Harvard University before graduating from Boston
University. He received a master's degree in political science from the
University of Pennsylvania in 1952 and a PhD in government from Princeton in
1960.
He taught at West Virginia University, Boston College, Tufts University and
Trinity College in Hartford, Conn., before coming to Washington.
Dr. Preston married Ravida Kennedy in 1958. They moved to Bethesda after 46
years in the District.
He was a member of St. Columba's Episcopal Church and assisted the homeless
through a church program.
As a hobby, Dr. Preston maintained two hand-operated printing presses in his
basement to make invitations. He kept the letter blocks in pigeonholes and
inserted them into printing trays.
In addition to his wife, of Bethesda, survivors include three children,
Emily Brunkhurst of Canterbury, N.H., Andrew Preston of Wenham, Mass., and
Sarah Schrott of Portland, Ore.; and four grandchildren.

BOSTON, Nov. 22—In Trinity Protestant Episcopal Church this afternoon, Miss Ravida Duryee Kennedy was married to Nathaniel Stone Preston. The ceremony was performed by the Rev. Dr. Theodore Parker Ferris. He was assisted by the Rev. Dr. Richard Greeley Preston, uncle of the bridegroom.
Mrs. Preston is the daughter of Mrs. Charles Isaac Johnson of Chestnut Hill, and the late Francis Kennedy of Baltimore. Her husband is a son of Mr. and Mrs. Jerome Preston of Hingham.
Francis Ells Kennedy gave his sister in marriage. Mrs. Francis Ells Kennedy was her sister-in-law's matron of honor.

RAVIDA KENNEDY PRESTON December 14, 1930 - April 10, 2015
Ravida K. Preston died April 10, 2015, at the age of 84 surrounded by family and friends. Born to Francis and Ravida Ells Kennedy in Baltimore, she spent her summers in East Hampton, NY. After graduating, she continued her love of learning through studies at Oxford University and many other courses.In 1955, she moved to Boston where she met her husband, Nathaniel Stone Preston while volunteering. They were married at Trinity Church in 1958 and moved to Washington DC in 1961. She raised her three children and made what would become life-long friendships with a group of women and their families, which continue with their children and grandchildren.Ravida was active in the environmental movement as the treasurer with Concern Inc. She also helped to clean up the Potomac River and to preserve the natural beauty of Squam Lake in NH. She had a passion for investing in the stock market and together, with a friend, started an investment club that lasted over 20 years. She was an active member of her garden club and book club and loved to discuss politics and religion.Later volunteer passions of hers included visitations with fellow parishioners at St. Columba's church, helping to create the Pastoral Care Center at St. Columba's, feeding the homeless, visiting patients at Sibley hospital, and fighting for the right to die with dignity. She brought her warmth, caring and great sense of humor to those she helped.Ravida was a fun, energetic person, treasured as a friend, confidante, spirit-lifter, and willing partner in any adventure. Her adventurous spirit led her to travel all over the world. She avidly played bridge, tennis, golf and many other games, particularly delighting in playing card games with her children and grandchildren.Ravida was predeceased by her parents, her husband of 51 years, and her brother Frank Kennedy. She is survived by her children and grandchildren, Emily Preston of Canterbury, NH, Andrew Preston and his children, Rachel and Charlie, of Danvers, MA and Sarah Schrott, her husband David, and their children Jack and Sam of Portland, OR. She is also survived by her many close friends, who feel like family to her children.A service in celebration of her life will be held Thursday, April 16 at 1:30 pm at St. Columba's Church in Washington DC. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Natural Resources Defense Council.
