Dr. Michael S. Diamond (born 1964) :
[Dr. Michael S. Diamond (born 1964) said]: "I came to Washington University in 2001. I was interviewing in about 2000, and, of course, in 1999, West Nile had just been entered into the United States in New York. There was a faculty member who was at UC Davis at the time (now in Albany), [Dr. Laura Dean Kramer (born 1946)], who collaborated with [Dr. Eva Harris (born 1965)]. Kramer, who is a mosquito specialist, and I had a conversation about what we thought might happen with West Nile virus. " ( Source : [HP00DF][GDrive] )

ABOUT
The research program of the Arbovirus Laboratories focuses on basic and applied field and laboratory studies examining the interaction of mosquito and tick-borne arboviruses, arthropod vectors, and vertebrate hosts, and how this interaction impacts transmission intensity and perpetuation of the pathogen. The research program includes studies with alpha- and flaviviruses, examining intrinsic (genetic) and extrinsic (temperature, dose, time after infection) factors affecting vectorial capacity. Our studies are currently focusing on the flavivirus, West Nile virus (WNV), which, like all flaviviruses, is a positive sense, single-stranded RNA virus. Research addresses the molecular epidemiology of this virus over time and space, as well as that of eastern equine (EEEV; alpha-virus). WNV is being studied intensively to elucidate the virus-vector interactions and viral molecular biology that led to rapid evolution in North America. Research is underway to elucidate mechanisms by which arboviruses overwinter in temperate environments, particularly EEEV in northeastern USA. Other studies are ongoing that examine factors that constrain or enhance viral evolution and adaptation to arthropod and avian hosts. In particular, the lab is focusing on the role of intrahost viral diversity and how this impacts viral fitness.
Dr. Laura Kramer Joins IJID Editorial Team
January 12, 2021
ISID is pleased to welcome Dr. Laura Kramer to the International Journal of Infectious Diseases (IJID) editorial team as Associate Editor. Dr. Kramer will work closely with Eskild Petersen the Editor-in-Chief, and the the other Associate Editors. Together, the IJID editorial team will identify and invite high-quality papers, or invited editorials, process original articles, and act as ambassadors for the Journal in their sphere of influence.
Dr. Laura Kramer, PhD has 50 years’ experience studying arboviruses in the field and laboratory, from both experimental and observational approaches, using both classical and molecular tools. She was Director of the Arbovirus Laboratory, Wadsworth Center, New York State Department of Health from 2000 -2020 when she retired, and Professor of Biomedical Sciences, State University of New York (SUNY) School of Public Health, Albany, NY. She is also an Adjunct Professor in the Biology department at SUNY Albany. She remains a consultant on her active grants, which focus on basic and applied field and laboratory studies examining the interaction of mosquito and tick-borne arboviruses, their vector and vertebrate hosts, and how these interactions impact transmission intensity, adaptation and evolution of the pathogen. Research addresses the molecular epidemiology of these viruses over time and space, as well as their ecology and epidemiology. She has been continuously funded by NIAID since 1998. Her work has resulted in more than 230 publications, 30 invited book chapters, and more than 100 invited presentations in national and international settings.
Dr. Kramer is the recipient of several awards that recognize her accomplishments in arbovirology, most recently in 2018, the RM Taylor award for lifetime excellence in research, from the American Society for Tropical Medicine and Hygiene; and in 2014 and 2019, Fulbright International Scholar’s award to conduct research and teach in Argentina.Dr. Kramer also is a virology moderator of ProMED-mail and an author in the virus section of Merck manuals.
