Structured Literacy

Structured Literacy is based on the Science of Reading and the research about the way our brains learn. 

This is a focus on the alphabetic code.  This means that tamariki learn the first 8 letter sounds before bringing home reading material. 

There are a few words that the children will learn at school that are not able to be sounded out in the early stages. These are called Heart Words. 

The children move through the 7 stages of Structured Literacy at individual rates depending on their knowledge of the sounds. Some tamariki are whole language learners, which means they are working in the later stages of Structured Literacy.
