10th grade students launched this project by hearing from and talking to the Director of Student Services. He explained what it means to be a member of a marginalized demographic, and how different demographics are performing according to state/school recognized data.
Once students had a working definition of marginalized demographics, students formed groups. They conducted local research to determine how to improve things for students who belong to those groups at Hopewell High School. They created proposals for what changes the school could make to improve things for these groups at a local level. They were asked to emphasize what the smallest and most reasonable changes could be made that would have the greatest impact on the groups they researched. Students practiced multiple drafts of their presentation with time between to make improvements. At the end of the unit, they presented their proposals to HHS administration and the Director of Student Services.
