IB Learner Portfolio Maintenance
Turn-in Link for this assignment
(Note: Turn-in for this assignment actually happens during the tech set-up very early in the school year, and there’s no need for students to resubmit their portfolio links after that.)
IB English students are required to create and maintain learner portfolios, in which they collect various items that will inform their selections related to official IB assessments. Put simply, the portfolio is designed to benefit students by providing them with a central location where they can easily access helpful materials that will make the successful completion of IB assessments more likely.
Each student will create a Google site that will serve as the hub for all the materials produced or collected by the student throughout the two-year course. Additionally, each student will create an additional Google site for each work studied, linking each new site back to the hub for easy navigation of the student’s experience throughout both 11th and 12th grade.
While the student has freedom to collect in the portfolio any items that they think will be helpful, the following items will be required for each work* in the IB English 11 course:
SISTER Draft
A picture of the student’s handwritten/in-class essay
The student’s final literary analysis essay (Be sure to create a “portfolio copy” of this product to post on the portfolio, as any copy you submitted through Google Classroom will be viewable by only you and Mr. Lochamy.)
The student’s piece (300-400 words) exploring the connections between the work and a global issue along with a picture of at least one page/passage that both addresses the global issue in question and lends itself to interesting literary analysis
The student’s piece (300-400 words) exploring the way that the work approaches one of the Seven Concepts
*Note: The requirements for Nineteen Eighty-Four are different and are outlined in the instructions we used at the beginning of the year to set up our portfolios.
In addition to the requirements above for each work during the IB English 11 year, the following requirement also applies to the student’s portfolio:
Students must include on their portfolio (and clearly label as such under a section titled “Paper Presentations”) their properly formatted paper presentation papers (one per semester). (Be sure to create a “portfolio copy” for each of these products to post on the portfolio, as any copy you submitted through Google Classroom will be viewable by only you and Mr. Lochamy.)
Other items, such as those listed below, might be collected by the student at the student’s discretion:
Notes/annotations (or pictures of such) the student has made throughout the study of the work
Multimedia (e.g., songs, videos, author interviews, works of art, etc.) that the student can relate to the work
Theories the student is working on throughout the study of the work related to its analysis
Lastly, should a student opt to complete the Independent Reading assignment during any nine-week period, a log of that reading should be included on the student’s learner portfolio (on a sub-site of its own linked back to the portfolio hub).
Students’ portfolios will be checked by Mr. Lochamy near the end of each nine weeks (and students do not need to submit their portfolio for inspection, as Mr. Lochamy already has those links). Students who have–at the time of the initial portfolio check for the grading period–a portfolio that a) clearly demonstrates a good-faith effort to maintain the portfolio in a neat, orderly, and easily navigable manner and b) includes all of the required items/elements will receive a score of 40 for the assignment. All others will receive a score of 0 unless their portfolios can be brought into compliance by the time grades are due for the quarter, at which point their portfolio score will be capped at either 30 or 20 points–depending on how many subsequent reviews are required.
