This page is intended to be a user guide for Google Classroom. It will be split in to manageable chunks so that it can be easily followed and guide you through the core features of Google Classroom.
Google Classroom is a platform that acts as a virtual classroom where a teacher can interact with learners much like they do in a physical classroom in the school.
It offers an environment where teachers can hand out digital resources for lessons and also allows them to set independent study tasks to all learners or to an individual
Google Classroom can be accessed from any internet enabled device using https://classroom.google.com or using the app on your provided iPad the icon for which is show to the right here.
When you open classroom it will ask you to sign in please sign in as your username@honywoodschool.com email account. This will then take you through to the classroom dashboard, this account has been pre-setup for you by the IT team and is integrated with all your personal classes.
If using classroom on the iPad it will only ask you to sign in to the first G Suite app and then reuse that account across all apps. Again make sure you sign in with your username@honywoodschool.com email account.
When you open your Google Classroom all your timetabled lessons will show. Each lesson will have an icon this is the entry point to each classroom.
There is a menu in the top left marked with three horizontal lines (it is marked with a 1 in the next section). In the image to the right this gives a drop down list of all classes and a "to do" list which i will talk about later.
All the classes will be using the same codes that appear on your timetable similar to this.
Class 2019-9aEn2 for a C9 English class
Class 2019-9bMa4 for a C9 Maths class
To the right of this text is an example of the google classroom home screen once you have signed in. You can see the classes listed - much like walking in the front gate at school all the classes are there for you to go to.
When you click on one of the classrooms in the above image you get taken in to the classroom screen where everything relates to the class you selected - treat it like walking in the door of the classroom in school. An example of this is shown to the right

The class stream showing all lesson material and IS (classwork) simply click on one to open that topic/work
The next three are the different pages you can navigate to

CLASSROOM TO DO LIST-opening Google Classroom and clicking on the to do list shows all IS Assignments see TOP TIPS #1 at the bottom of this page
Submitting work on Google Classroom could not be simpler. There are a few steps and two paths depending on what you have been sent from the teacher and what is asked of you.
Generally teachers send out resources to guide you through your IS. Along with this sometimes teachers send a template file and request you fill in the blanks which is automatically added to the IS assignment. Other times you create files from scratch deciding what application or resource to use then attach the files you created to the assignment in google classroom.
Simply find the the assignment you have been set and click on it to see what you need to do.
Below are two examples that show how to do both ways. They are using a test assignment that is not real but highlights two different ways similar things can be requested.
Your teacher has supplied you a template file to complete your work you now need to open that and fill it in.
Click the Assignment in a google classroom you wish to start.
2. This shows the IS Assignment details telling you what you need to do. To start press "Your Work" at the bottom of the page
3. When you press "your work" a popup menu appears and will show you the resources or template file the teacher has attached for you - in this case its a template. Click on the file to open "YOUR" copy of the template
4. Once the template is open you can edit it as it is your own copy. All changes are saved automatically there is no "save button"
Once you are finished - press the Tiny X button in the top left hand corner of the screen next to the clock to return to Google Classroom
5. At any time you can go back and edit the work by pressing the link here UNTIL you are finished. Then you must HAND IN and confirm the work for the teacher to be able to mark it.
If the teacher has not created a template you are free to create your own files and upload them to Google Classroom - feel free to use google docs/slides/sound files/small videos/ Images or PDF'ed book creators to create your work - what you use should be guided by the teachers request and IS task
This is by far the simplest method and document type to use as it is fully integrated in to Google Classroom.
Open the Assignment in Google Classroom you wish to start.
Click the Assignment in a Google Classroom you wish to start.
2. This shows the IS Assignment details telling you what you need to do. To start press "Your Work" at the bottom of the page
3. When you press your work a popup menu appears and you can select to add an attatchemnt
4. In this assignment I was asked to use a Google Slides so i will pick this. a google slide is created and it is attached to the Assignment automatically
5. The google slide then automatically opens and i can start my work all changes are saved automatically there is no "save button"
The documents name is at the top of the page
Once i am finished I press the Tiny back to google classroom button in the top left hand corner of the screen next to the clock
6. At any time you can go back and edit the work by pressing the link here UNTIL you are finished then you must HAND IN and confirm the work for the teacher to be able to mark it.
Once work has been attached, if you need to add additional items then swipe up from the bottom where the horizonal line is, as shown below.
Then you'll be able to add the additional items as needed by tapping the "Add work" button at the bottom. As can be seen below, two items have now been added.
Basic rules for uploading items to Google Classroom is if you can upload it to Google Classroom/Drive from the iPad or device it will work. Always check the application you are using can save to Google Classroom/Drive before you start your work. To check look for this symbol(gray to the right) and check classroom is an option. when it comes up (blue background to the right), sometimes you need to press more to get the Classroom/Drive options to appear this can be seen to the right also.
When you press this classroom button you will get a screen like this. This opens a class. To change class press the little arrow in the top right and the class.
2. This then brings you up a list of classes to choose from pick the class that you wish to upload to.
3. Now you need to select which assignment you want to upload it to.
4. Now the upload takes place - this can take sometime especially when you are at home as it is dependent on your internet connection. When it finished you will be shown the screen in step 5
5. After the upload is done you are shown the assignment screen where you can upload more items from drive or repeat the process to add extra things from other applications.
6. When you are done you MUST hand in the work. Failing to do this wig ll mean your teacher cannot mark it and you will be shown as not having done the IS. To do this press hand in, then confirm the hand in on the popup... JOB DONE
Now that we have successfully handed in our work for the teacher to mark, how do I know how I did?
Google Classroom has a set of tools for returning feedback to learners that the teacher can implement.
Whenever a teacher makes a comment or returns work you will receive a notification and or an email informing you that you have received feedback.
You can either click on the link in these notification to take you directly to the Assignment feedback or you can go back to it yourself by opening Google Classroom and using one of the methods described above in the section called "How do i look at the IS task i have been set".
Once you have found the assignment you wish to see the feedback and mark for, open it and you will see the screen to the right.
At the bottom of the page on the left you can see "Your Work", with "1 private comment" below this and over to the right is the grade given (if applicable) - pressing the arrow near the centre will expand and show you your work and the general assignment comments screen.
There are two types of comments that a teacher can apply to your work.
General comments and specific detail comments see below for details regarding both
The teacher can comment generally on the work .
These appear on the assignment screen as seen to the right.
These comments are intended to give overall feedback to the work - be it good or bad and possibly direct you to the specific comments contained further in the feedback.
Specific detail comments are intended to bring specific areas of your work to your attention, they might highlight exceptionally good areas or areas that require improvement. either way there are there to help you make the most of the assignment.
In this example the teacher has added two additional slides to the your work and left comments on each requesting more information.
To access these comments you must open the work in the above section by pressing the yellow google slide that in this case has "15aatest" at the start of its name.
Once the slide is open you will see additions a teacher has made but you will NOT see the comments as this is only a preview.
To view the comments press this icon in the top right hand corner of the page that looks like a square with an arrow. this takes this document and fully opens it in google slides (or which ever document type you used).
From here it is possible to see the comments on each page. In this case it is a google slide so there is a little comment symbol on each page that contains a comment at the bottom of the document. When you press on a page the comment should show if it does not you can press the view button at the bottom of the page on the right hand side.
At any point you can reply to your teacher to ask questions or get more advice by using these comments.
Keeping track of your independent study(IS) assignments can be a difficult task but with Google Classroom it is done for you. There is a simple to use menu option that keeps a list of all items you have outstanding.
To access the to do list, click the icon shown in the above section marked with a "What does it look like inside a Google Classroom?" and it is item number #1
This is the to do list an example can be seen to the right here - this list is automatically updated as you complete tasks.
The image to the right shows this list is split in to 4 sections but this can vary depending on due dates.
There is a "TO DO" and a "DONE" list you can toggle between these by pressing the menu at the top centre of the screen. You can see the two options there TO DO and DONE - we are currently on the TO DO list
This list is split in to multiply sections
missing
no due date
due today
due tomorrow
and due XX where xx is the date its due
This makes prioritising the IS very simple giving clear guidance to which are due next.
To view an IS item simply click/press on the chosen assignment.
The reason for this is you have probably not handed in your work after finishing it.
Please go back and check using these instructions.
Click the Assignment in a Google Classroom you need to hand in.
2. This shows the IS Assignment details telling you what you need to do. Press "Your Work" at the bottom of the page.
3. This next page must show handed in in the top right corner for your teacher to see the work. If it does not the problem is you have not handed in the work. Press the HAND in Button and confirm you wish to hand the work in. Your teacher will be notified once completed.
