Our Writing Program Term 4

Kia ora whānau,

In Year 2, we focus on developing independent writing skills. Building on the foundation of pencil grip and letter formation, students will now work on writing complete sentences with correct punctuation. They will explore descriptive writing and recounts, learning how to express their ideas clearly and creatively. Our goal is for tamariki to feel confident in writing on their own, celebrating their progress as they become more independent writers.

Casey the Caterpillar Handwriting Program

In Year 2, we continue using the Casey the Caterpillar program to refine letter and number formation. Students will focus on improving letter size, spacing, and fluency. The program helps them develop strong handwriting skills by teaching correct starting points and pencil grip.

You can support your child by ensuring they hold their pencil correctly, start letters from the right point, and practice regularly to build neat and consistent handwriting.

How can you support your child at home?

Make writing fun

  • Help your child write an alphabet letter, then go letter hunting in your house or in a book to find that letter.

  • Let your child see you writing – you can use your first language.

  • Encourage them to write shopping lists or make birthday cards.

  • Water and a paintbrush on a dry path or a stick in the sand are fun ways to write letters and words.

  • Support the learning of letters and sounds using appropriate apps.

Here's a tip: It is important that they have fun when writing at home and that they keep trying.  If they get letters or words backwards or misspelt, praise them for trying and encourage them to have another look at it.  If letters are backwards, you can write the correct letter somewhere for them to copy.
