11.1.21- Remote Learning Information

Good Morning Toucans! I hope that you have all had a lovely weekend.

As Miss Todd stated in her App message at the end of last week things are going to be a little different with home learning this week and for the weeks going forward while we are at home.

Instead of one email a week I am going to email you each school day with a brief timetable of work for the day, the email will also include resources that you will need for the day (I plan to email this the night before in case you want to get any resources ready before the next day). This plan is only a guideline as to when you could complete the activities, it is completely up to you and your parents as to when and in what order you complete the work. (Parents- I have put the work into a timetable purely so it follows Government Guidance to set daily work which is similar to our school day and covers the 3 hours of learning that we are required to set. Please do not feel that you have to follow the timetable (or that I am telling you when to have your break and lunchtimes!), it is purely to reflect our school day. It is of course up to you as a parent when you complete the work and it can be as flexible as you wish.) In Monday's email you will also a recieve a timetable of the activities that are to follow for the rest of the week.

I will now only be setting work via your tabecat email address and I will not be putting it on here as well. I know that most of you have already been accesssing your email accounts but if not here is some information to help you to get logged in.

In order to access your emails please click on the email link on the tabecat page. If you do this on a device or phone as this is a google account it may automatically bring up your other gmail accounts in which case you will need to add your email.

The email address is username@tabecat.com and the password is the same as your log in.

Please keep sending any completed work to me, I love seeing it! If possible please send any work over to be by Thursday so that I can send feedback on Friday about how your home learning has gone for the week.

Have a lovely week, any questions please ask,

Mrs Nethersole

Below is some information that Mr Handy sent out earlier this year about how to access your emails.

A reminder of how our pupil emails are set up that will hopefully help:

Since 2010 we have used G Suite for Education (GSfE) for all staff & pupil email addresses. This is a Google product designed for educational use and does not have adverts. Each element of a usual Google account (Gmail, Drive etc.) is mirrored in G Suite for Education. The difference is that as a school we have greater control over what can and can not be done with each element, for example restricting access or filtering content.

Every pupil at Holy Trinity has a Google account using GSfE. The username for that account is their Tabecat email address. (In the same way an adult's Google account username is their Gmail address.)

Imagine a pupil called Bob Bobness (it's the imaginary person I use in lessons!) His Google account username is bobbob@tabecat.com - his email address.

So, when Bob wants to access his email and clicks on the email link on www.tabecat.com he is taken to a GMail/Google Account login page - because his school email address is part of his Google account.

The username is bobbob@tabecat.com and the password is the usual password for other logins.

If as a parent you are already logged into your GMail/Google Account you can choose to logout or "add another account" - in this case add means login as bobbob@tabecat.com

You do not need to register a new email account.

On a Chromebook your child can login using their Tabecat email address & usual password.

On an Android device you can add a new Google account and use your child's Tabecat email address & usual password for this.

Your child's Tabecat email address is a GMail/Google account.

child@tabecat.com works the same way as parent@gmail.com

Your child can only email within the people at school: to & from other @tabecat.com (pupils) and @holytrinithalstead.com (staff) email addresses. Some Google features are switched off for e-safety reasons.

Note 1: Logging into the Chrome browser or a Chromebook using your child's Tabecat address comes with extra e-safety protection as adblockers and content filters are automatically pushed out as they are at school. It can't be as strict as using our broadband at school with its extra filters, but it is useful.

Note 2: Tabecat is our e-safety mascot, which is why we have a Tabecat page and the chidren's email accounts are @tabecat.com

I know that this seem quite a lot to take in, but the bits in bold are the key bits. From the emails we've been receiving I know that a lot of pupils have been accessing their email accounts at home, but I understand that if you don't know your child's email is a Google Account it can cause some confusion.

Please let us know if you are still having problems and we'll try and help.

5.1.21

Happy New Year!! We hope that you had a wonderful Christmas and enjoyed your New Year celebrations! We really hoped that we would have been back in school this week but this is not the case so we have another week of home learning.

This term is our EXPLORE term where we focus on Geography and DT and the question we are looking at in year 2 is 'Is it a small world?' We will be looking at continents and oceans, using maps and learning about Kenya in Geography. In DT we are going to be making moving pictures using different mechanisms.

Here is what we would like you to do this week.....

Writing

Lesson 1 Aim: To understand and use co-ordinating conjuctions. Complete the BBC Bitesize lesson https://www.bbc.co.uk/bitesize/articles/zjdxhbk . There are activities to complete and work your way through.

Lesson 2 Aim: To understand and use sub-ordinating conjuctions. Complete the BBC Bitesize lesson that you will find here https://www.bbc.co.uk/bitesize/articles/zsm9g7h There are activities to complete and work your way through.

Lesson 3 Aim: To understand, identify and use word classes including nouns, adjectives, verbs and adverbs. Complete the BBC bitesize lesson and activities that you will find here https://www.bbc.co.uk/bitesize/articles/zgxmwnb.

Reading

Please make sure that you are still accessing your Bug Club online bookbag- it is full of books for you to read. As you are going through the book make sure that you answer the comprehension questions by clicking on the bugs.

I have sent over a reading comprehension activity for you to do as well.

Spelling

For the next couple of weeks we are going to focus on the Year 2 common exception word list for our spellings. At the end of year 2 your child should be able to read and spell all of these words. I have sent you over an activity booklet that has lots of activities that you can complete that will help you to learn to read and spell these words. This booklet will be to last you this week and next week so you don't have to do all of the activities this week!

Maths

In maths we are starting our unit on Multiplication and Division. The first couple of lessons are recapping on lots of year 1 learning so your child may find it a little easy. Please still complete the activities and work because we will be using it to build upon.

Lesson 1 Aim: To recognise equal groups. Watch this video https://vimeo.com/488106597 There is a worksheet to go through that links to the video which I will attach in the email that I send over.

Lesson 2 Aim: To make equal groups. Watch this video https://vimeo.com/488108584 There is a worksheet to go through that links with the video. You could also have a go at practically making equal groups with objects from around your house.

Lesson 3 Aim: To add equal groups. Watch this video https://vimeo.com/488110327 There is a worksheet to go through that links with the video.

Science

This half term in science we are learning about everyday materials and their uses. An everyday material is a physical substance that is used to make an object e.g. plastic or metal. Take a look at this Youtube video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=e5h5RgiagrU&feature=youtu.be and then complete the sheet investigating what everyday materials you can find around the house and their uses. For a challenge can you make a bar chart to show your findings?

Topic

This term we move onto our Explore term where our focus is Geography and Design and Technology. We are going to start our learning with some Geography and we are going to look at the seven continents. We would like you to complete this lesson on the Oak Academy website https://classroom.thenational.academy/lessons/what-is-a-continent-c9k32d . I will also send you over a map to fill in the seven continents that you can either use with the video or fill it in after to see if you can remember them.

We would love to see what you are up to this week, please send any completed work to nnethersole@holytrinityhalstead.co.uk

Have a lovely week,

Toucan Team

Wishing all of our Toucans a very Merry Christmas!

We know these last two weeks have been different to how we would have all liked them to be in school, but we really do hope that you have enjoyed the time at home with your families and are now very much in the Christmas spirit.

Thank you to all the parents that have supported us with home learning, we know that it is not always easy.

We look forward to seeing you all back in school in January, have the best Christmas!

Mrs Nethersole, Mr Handy, Miss Smith and Mrs Mann x

14.12.20

Hi Toucans,

I hope that you are all well, and enjoying your time at home on the run up to Christmas. Thank you so much for all the emails of your work this week and Christmas jumper photos, it is lovely to see you all.

Here is your work for the final week of school in 2020!

English

1) Tell me about the Christmas traditions that you have with your family. Write down all the ways that you celebrate Christmas with your family, how do you make it special? Is there something different that you do with your family to celebrate that is different to other families?

2) Christmas Cracker Contractions- Before we finished school Miss Smith taught you all about apostrophes for contractions. I have attached a worksheet to complete looking at contracted words and finding out what words have been contracted to make the new words. If you would like a quick reminder there is a little one here https://www.bbc.co.uk/bitesize/topics/zvwwxnb/articles/zcyv4qt of how apostrophes for contractions work.

3) The Mystery of The Christmas Cookie Crime- A mystery to solve by using your spelling, punctuation and grammar skills. Solve the clues to work out which reindeer ate the Christmas cookies! I have sent you the activity in the email I have sent to you.

Reading

Christmas comprehension- In your email I have attached a Christmas comprehension activity for you to do. Read the information and answer the questions. You don't have to do all the sheets but choose one that you think you can do. If you can't print this out at home read a story with a grown up and ask them to ask you some questions about the story to see if you can remember what happens. They might want to ask you to predict what you think might happen next, what some of the vocabulary means, how you think the characters might be feeling at certain points or see if you can remember certain information from the text.

Keep reading your banded book, a book of your choice or on bug club and keep practising your phonics cards every day or as much as possible. We are aware that some children have had problems accessing their virtual bookbag on Bug Club. If you can not login to the account on Bug Club, you could try reading these books from Oxford Owl https://www.oxfordowl.co.uk/for-home/find-a-book/library-page/ Your parents will need to register free to the site but there are books on here that are similar to what we have in school. Select levels > book band and click on the colour that you are working on. This is indicated as a sticker on one of your reading books in your zippy wallet.

Maths

1) Christmas tree measuring- using some paper that a grown up has said is OK to cut up (any paper will do- card, wrapping paper etc), cut out some strips of paper about 2cm in width. Use a ruler to measure 1cm on your strip, cut it out then place it in the middle at the top of a piece of paper. Next measure 2cm and place it below the 1cm. Carry on measuring strips but increasing it by 1cm every time. Your shape should make a Chritsmas tree, you could then decorate your tree however you like. See below for a photo to show you one I made earlier!

2) The Mystery of the Missing Reindeer Bells Maths Game- A mystery that you need to solve by completing Maths problems. Work through the maths puzzles to find out who the culprit is for the missing reindeer bells! I have sent you the activity in the email I have sent to you.

PE

Mr Wiskin has set you a PE Bingo challenge. See how many activities you can tick off this week or over the Christmas holidays. I have attatched this in the email that I have sent to you.

Topic

IT'S CHRISTMAS! Make a Christmas card for a friend, make some Christmas cookies (good way to practise measuring skills too!), create a decoration for your Christmas tree/ window, decorate your ceiling with paper chains or snuggle up and watch a Christmas film. All we want you to do is have some Christmas fun!

Computing

Go onto Purple Mash and find 2Paint. Choose the nest tool in 2Paint to create a lovely Christmas picture. No words, just an image that is Christmassy! Don't forget to save it. (You don't need to email the image, we'll find it.)

Please email any completed work to nnethersole@holytrinityhalstead.com I look forward to seeing what you have got up to!

Have a lovely week,

Mrs Nethersole

7.12.20

Good Morning Toucans!

So it seems it will be a little while longer before we see each other again, I hope that you are all keeping well and enjoying your time at home.

Here is your work to complete for the rest of the week (Today's work is below this post too in case you missed it!).

English

We have been looking at postcards for the last few weeks, we have looked at features of a postcard and have written a class model of one based on the book 'Meerkat Christmas.' In 'Meerkat Christmas' Sonny the meerkat travels around the world to find the perfect Christmas and sends letters/ postcards back to his friends in the Kalahari of his adventures. This week we were going to write our own postcard. I would like you to imagine that you take a visit to the North Pole to see Father Christmas and send a postcard back to your loved ones of what you got up to. (Parents- we were going to watch 'The Snowman' film to help us to generate ideas of what we might have seen/ done. Specifically the bit where the little boy flies off with the snowman to have the Christmas party with Father Christmas. If you happen to have the film at home it might be helpful- it doesn't matter if not.)

1) Plan what you are going to say in your postcard. Remember the structure of a postcard that we have been looking at.

Greeting, 5 W's and How, Best Bit, Activities, Fun Fact/ Did you Know?, Sign off and P.S.

I have included a planning sheet in your email if you wish to use it.

2) Write your postcard using your planning sheet to help you. I would like you to try and use commas for a list, apostrophes for contracted words, noun phrases and adjectives to describe what you can see, touch and hear. These are all things that we have been looking at in class over the last couple of weeks.

3) Read back through your postcard, make sure that it makes sense. Look for spelling and punctuation errors (your grown ups can help you with this) and see if you can correct them. Is there anything you could add into your postcard to make it more exciting to read?

Reading

Please spend at least 15 minutes each day reading or sharing books with an adult. There are plenty of books for you to read on Bug Club if you have finished your colour band book, or you can read or share a book from home.

Maths

2)To find the total of a set/ sets of coins. https://whiterosemaths.com/homelearning/year-2/week-11-measurement-money/

Watch the video and work through the pause and think questions. Ask a grown up to set out some groups of coins for you. See if you can combine two of the amounts and find the total.

3) To find the difference between amounts of coins. https://whiterosemaths.com/homelearning/year-2/week-11-measurement-money/

Watch the video and work through the pause and think questions. I will email over a worksheet to go with this lesson to complete.

Topic

On the tabecat page of the website follow the link called The Great Fire of London which will take you to a Great Fire of London game which you can work through. You have to look at sources and work out what information it tells us about the fire. It will also test your understanding of events of the fire.

Don't forget Sumdog, Teach Your Monster to Read and Bug Club are also available via the tabecat page of the website for you to use as you wish for some extra activities.

I would love to see any work that you have completed at the end of the week, my email address is nnethersole@holytrinityhalstead.com I love getting photos of what you have been up to as well!

I am really hopeful that we can be back at school for a few days before the holidays so that we can have a bit of Christmas fun before we break up!

Have a lovely week,

Mrs Nethersole

4.12.20

I hope that you have enjoyed your last couple of days off Toucans, you even got snow!

Thank you to those that have emailed me over work so far that they have completed.

Here is your work for Monday to do whilst you are at home.

Maths

To compare different amounts of money. https://whiterosemaths.com/homelearning/year-2/week-11-measurement-money/

Watch the video and work through the pause and think questions. Ask a grown up to sort a few coins (and notes if feeling really confident) into two piles and see if you can work out which is the biggest amount. Can write the correct greater than >, less than < or equals to =, symbol between them? (Don't forget the crocodile likes to eat the biggest amount/ number!)

Phonics

https://lettersandsounds.org.uk/for-home/y2-phonics-screening-check-revision With the phonics screening check coming up any of these revision lessons will be helpful for you to have a look at. However these are the sounds that we often find tricky-lesson 11 ue blue, lesson 12 ew chew, lesson 13 u-e use, lesson 14 aw, lesson 24 u unicorn, lesson 27 wh, lesson 28 ie field and lesson 29 g gem, so could be a good starting point.

Computing

Login to Purple Mash and create an animation. The first week we made a shape get bigger and smaller. Then we moved a shape around the screen. This time try to make TWO things happen! Maybe one changing size and the other moving, or both the same - it's up to you. Remember you need to create at least 30 slides to make your animation look great.

Access Purple Mash via www.tabecat.com using your usual login details - just like you do in class! Please save your work as ani4 and I'll have a look at them next week.

RE

We are coming to end of our topic on Special Places. As you're at home, talk to an adult about their special place or places. Ask them why the place is special to them. Is it because of a memory, or it is because it's a beautiful place? Is it a physical place, or does it depend on who or what is there? Tell your adult about your special place, compare it to your adult's favourite place, and tell them why it's special to you.

Don't forget to keep reading as well! I have checked and all of you have got books available on Bug Club and if you happen to run out send me an email (nnethersole@holytrinityhalstead.com) to let me know and I will update them for you. Any reading you do will be added into the reading raffle next week.

We look forward to seeing you all on Tuesday,

Toucan Team

2.12.20

Good afternoon,

I hope that you are enjoying your unexpected day at home!

Here are a couple of things that you can do to keep you busy for the next couple of days based on what we have been doing at the start of the week.

Maths

https://whiterosemaths.com/homelearning/year-2/week-10-measurement-money/ Here you will find videos on the money work that we have been doing this week. You can watch any of the videos as it will be good recapping but the next lesson that we were going to complete in class would have been the selecting money one. Watch the videos and work through the 'pause and have a think' questions as you watch them.

You could also set up a shop at home where you have to pay for items (we haven't covered getting change yet!) counting out the correct pounds and pence.

English

https://www.bbc.co.uk/bitesize/articles/zh7bgwx This is a link to a video and activities on using commas for a list. We have looked briefly at using commas for lists in class and this will help you to understand how to use them a little more.

Phonics

https://lettersandsounds.org.uk/for-home/y2-phonics-screening-check-revision With the phonics screening check coming up any of these revision lessons will be helpful for you to have a look at.

Spelling

We have been learning about homophones in spelling sessions. See if you can explain to an adult what a homophone is, how many different homophones can you list? https://www.bbc.co.uk/bitesize/topics/zqhpk2p/articles/zc84cwx Here is a short video if you would like a quick reminder of what a homophone is.

It would be lovely to see what you have been up to, please email over any work at the end of the week to nnethersole@holytrinityhalstead.com

Have a lovely couple of days and I hope that I can see you soon!

Mrs Nethersole

27.11.20

Good afternoon,

As always we have had a busy week in Toucan Class this week. In English we have been busy writing postcards based on the story 'Meerkat Christmas', the children have wowed me with their writing and have been getting excited about writing something Christmassy! We have had to include commas for lists and apostrophes for possession and contraction which has been a little tricky! It would be great if you could have a little practise of these. We have sat Maths assessment papers this week and in Maths next week we'll be learning about money.

In maths over the next couple of weeks we will be working with money. We will be recognising and counting coins and notes, comparing amounts, finding totals and difference, and working out some problems. It would be really helpful if you could talk about coin values and show how you use money for paying for items at home. I appreciate it is difficult at this moment to go shopping and pay with coins but perhaps you could set up a little ‘shop’ at home and have a practise of paying and getting change. This will help to reinforce the work that we are doing in school and give them some ‘real life’ context.

Thank you so much for your support with our reading raffle it is clear to see those children that are reading at home regularly and it is really helping them to make great progress! Well done Toucans!

Have a lovely weekend, keep practising those play words!

Toucan Team

20.11.20

A message from the office - If your child would like a Christmas Dinner lunch on Thursday 17th December, this needs to be ordered online by 26.11.20.

This week we have been sitting some reading assessment papers, we are very impressed with how the children have approached these with such a grown up attitude and have worked so very hard to try to read the questions and answer the text. Well done Toucans, brilliant work- Maths ones next week!

In Maths we have been learning to subtract a two digit number from another 2 digit number. This has included column subtraction but we haven't done any exchanging yet, we will get onto that soon. During English lessons we have been looking at nouns and we made an A to Z of different nouns, can your child tell you what they are and give you some examples? We also had an exciting lesson looking at Where's Wally Books and coming up with noun phrases as clues to describe people in the book so that the rest of the class could try to spot them. In phonics lessons we have been recapping on Phase 3 and 5 sounds looking at alternative spellings and rules.

Thank you for all the reading that has been going on at home, our reading raffle was very full this week and it definitely seems to be encouraging all the children to read a little more!

Have a great weekend,

Toucan Team

14.11.20

Happy weekend Toucans!

We have had another busy week here in Toucan Class. In English we have started looking at postcards, I wonder if your child could tell you the features we have been looking at and maybe draw some of the symbols we have used to represent these symbols? We have looked at how we can keep ourselves safe in PSHE, especially fire safety and we have also been mastering adding together two digit numbers in maths using column addition, which we all feel very grown up about! We also had a great time watching the duck race yesterday, even if some of us were a little disappointed that our ducks didn't win.

The children have enjoyed showing their first lot of homework to the rest of the class this week. We had lots of lovely Great Fire of London pictures and lots of effort on Sumdog and Bug Club. We were very impressed with how many children completed their homework, well done Toucans!

This week we started our reading raffle and it was lovely to see so many children really making the effort to read each night and we have lots of raffle tickets in the box. Events of Friday afternoon meant that we didn't do the reading raffle on Friday but Mr Handy will draw it on Monday instead. Thank you so much for all the support at home with this.

This week your child has been given their part in the KS1 Nativity. They will have brought a script home and their part will be highlighted in their script. It would be extremely helpful if you could help your child to learn their lines. (Mum and Dad characters will be able to read theirs, but it would be helpful if they are very familiar with them!) We will be doing lots of practising in school so please could we ask that scripts are always popped back into bags once you have finished practising at home so they are ready to be used at school.

Well done Toucans a great week, have a lovely weekend,

Toucan Team

6.11.20

Welcome back! We hope that you had a lovely holiday and enjoyed your time before our latest lockdown.

We have dived straight back in with our learning this week and have done lots of fabulous writing, writing diaries based on The Great Fire of London and creating firework poems which we have made into rockets. In Maths we are continuing our work on addition and subtraction and we have started to add two two- digit numbers this week.

Next week in English we are looking at postcards and the structure of these. If you have any postcards (we're looking at written ones, not just the postcard from different places) that you are willing for us to have a little look at it would be very helpful. Please make sure any that you send in are named or in a named envelope so that we can get them back to you! Thank you for your help.

As I mentioned before half term we are starting our reading raffle this week. Every time your child reads at home they will be given a raffle ticket (separate to the whole school main raffle) and at the end of the week we will pick out a winner who will receive a small prize from our class raffle box. We hope that this may encourage children to read at home as much as possible. We know that family life is very busy but we would really appreciate it if you could find some time to dedicate to their reading each day or as much as possible, it really does make a difference.

Your child will have brought home a homework grid tonight. Each week we would like them to complete one activity from the homework grid, it can be any activity they choose, but must be a different one each week. They can complete it in any way they would like but we would like to see what they have done, so they must be able to show us something. We will be giving credits and raffle tickets for any child who completes their homework each week. Time will be given each Wednesday to go through homework and your child will be given the opportunity to share what they have done.

Look out for nativity play scripts coming home soon, although we are not going to be performing a nativity to an audience this year we are very much still going to do a nativity, however it will look slightly different this year. The show must go on!

Have a lovely weekend,

Toucan Team

23.10.20

Wow! We have had a fantastic half term in Toucan Class. It has been lovely getting to know our Toucans this half term and it seems to have flown by!

We have really got stuck into learning about The Great Fire of London this week and I am sure that your children will have come home talking about Samuel Pepys and his diary (and maybe about him burying his wine and cheese in the garden as that is their favourite thing at the moment!) The really seem to be enjoying this topic and finding out all about the fire.

This week we have had Harvest Festival and the children made fantastic scarecrows which are now up on display around the school. I was very proud of their reading of The Dingle Dangle Scarecrow, they were so loud and clear and everyone has commented on how well they did, great work guys!

This afternoon your child will have come home with some maths games to play over half term. There is something for everyone on there and most of them can be played with limited resources or the resources that are in the pack. If you would however like to borrow a die from school or a set of playing cards then please let me know and I will send some home with your child when we return to school.

We have been revising all of the Phase 5 sounds this week in phonics. If you want to practise more phonics over half term don't forget we have Teach your Monster to Read on the tabecat page of the school website that you can log in to play. You can also check out https://www.phonicsbloom.com/ or https://www.phonicsplay.co.uk/ for more games which the children will be familiar with.

After half term to encourage more reading at home we will be starting a 'Reading Raffle'.

We hope that you have a wonderful half term and enjoy a well earned rest from school.

Take care and see you all soon,

Toucan Team

16.10.20

This week we have been hard at work again writing our own stories in English. We have used our story 'The Marvellous Fluffy Squishy Itty Bitty' as our stimulus and have all written stories about an important gift for a special person. The children worked incredibly hard and produced some lovely pieces of writing. In maths we have been looking at addition and subtraction, particularly related facts and 10 more and 10 less. There will be homework set from next week but for this week if you would like to practise anything at home it would be really useful to help your children to practise their formation of numbers. Not only making sure the numbers are the right way around, but also making sure that the digits are in the right place (twenty seven for example is written 27 and not 72).

We have been doing lots of phonics this week and we have even had a go at a practise phonics screening check. This week we have looked at the ar sound and we have been having a look at phase 4 which is lots of blending to read words.

We haven't had Mrs Mann in this week so we haven't managed to test the Maths award targets. If your child has missed their turn and are ready to be tested please write a note in their diary and we will make sure that they are tested next week.

It is lovely that some children are starting to complete their first reading rewards, well done to those children who are managing to read at home.

If you have asked for an appointment for a telephone parent consultation for next week we have sent these home with your child this afternoon.

Have a lovely weekend,

Toucan Team

9.10.20

We have had a great week this week. It was lovely to see so many different things that the children collect on Tuesday and the children had fun talking about these and asking each other questions about their collections. They had fun and worked hard during their 'Walk for the Walkway, Run for the Covers!' today and hopefully will have raised lots of money for the new walkways and covers needed around school.

This week in Phonics we have been looking at the or sound and some it's alternatives (aw and au). The children have been brilliant at spotting these in words and we have practised writing lots of these words too. It would be great if you could try and spot these sounds in their reading or remind them to use the right representation when writing these words. We have also done some general phase 5 revision this week and the children will be bringing home an activity booklet that they have started in class that they can finish off at home.

Although the children haven't been set any formal homework yet (this is coming soon), I would really like for all the children to try and read every day! If they forget their reading book one night then please remember that they all have books available on Bug Club or they can read their library book or any story from home instead.

Don't forget.......

  • Essex Sumdog contest this week, log in and have a go!

  • individual photos on Monday (12th).

  • to bring in any sponsorship money form the 'Walk for the Walkway, Run for the Covers!'

Have a lovely weekend, see you on Monday,

Toucan Team

2.10.20

Toucan Class have worked really hard on their writing this week, I have been very impressed with their vocabulary choices and the effort they are putting in to try and make their writing sound exciting. We are of course still making sure we remember finger spaces and punctuation in the correct places. They also had a brilliant walk with Mr Handy and he sang their praises about how great they were whilst out and about around town.

Next week linked to work in our English lessons we are going to look at collections. If your child has something that they collect at home, it could be pokemon cards, football cards or dolls for example we would like you to share this with us. Please could you bring in or email us (nnethersole@holytrinityhalstead.com) a photo of your child’s collection ready to be shared on Tuesday.

In phonics we have looked at the oe sound and some of it's alternatives (o-e, oe and ow) and the oi/oy sound. We have practised reading and writing lots of words with these sounds in, it would be great if you could try and spot these words in their reading or remind them to use the right representation when writing these words.

Although the children are not able to visit the library and choose books at the moment, Mrs Wrigley Brooks is bringing around a book trolley each week for the children to be able to choose books from. This will happen on a Monday afternoon, if your child wishes to swap their library book then please make sure that they have their book to return ready on that day.

Don't forget to read as much as you can, ideally every day, it really does make a difference to your child's reading progress and helps them in all subject areas.

Have a great weekend,

Toucan Team

25.9.20

We have had a really busy week this week. We have completed some food tasting and used this to gather lots of vocabulary for our writing, we have done lots of work looking at numbers and their place value in Maths and we have learnt about how we grow and change in Science. In phonics we have looked at the igh sound and some of it's alternatives (i-e and ie) and the oe sound and some of it's alternatives (o-e, oe and ow). We have practised reading and writing lots of words with these sounds in, it would be great if you could try and spot these words in their reading or remind them to use the right representation when writing these words.

Although originally we said the children could only change their reading books on a Monday or Thursday this didn't seem to work so well in class, so we are reverting back to them being able to change their book whenever they need to. We have a separate box that the children add their books into and books will stay in 'quarantine' for at least 48 hours before being put back. Please remember though it is useful to read the books more than once as repetition is a great way for your child to learn those unfamiliar words and develop fluency in reading. It is also important to talk about the books to ensure that your child understands and comprehends what they have read. If your child wishes to change their book it is their responsibility to make us aware, however if your not sure your child will remember please put it in their Toucan diary as these are checked daily.

As you may of heard from your child we didn't go on our walk on Friday due to the bad weather and traffic chaos around Halstead, Mr Handy will be taking them on Monday the 28th September instead.

Another great week, enjoy your weekend,

Toucan Team

18.9.20- What a great week!

We have had a great week in Toucan Class this week and we are getting used to being back at school.

We have tested all the children on their phoneme recognition over the last week and have sent home their phoneme mats so that you can work on these with your children. Any sound that has a tick by it your child already knows and any that are underlined are ones that we are working on with them at school. If your child has them all ticked off it would still be useful for you to recap these from time to time, just to make sure that they don’t forget them! We are busy doing daily phonics in class to make sure that we are ready for the screening check after half term. This week we have been revisiting the ai sound and some of it's alternatives (a_e and ay) and the ee sound and some of it's alternatives (e, ea and e_e). We have practised reading and writing lots of words with these sounds in it would be great if you could try and spot these words in their reading.

Every child now also has their current Maths award targets in their Toucan communication books and these will be tested every other week on a Thursday. It would be very helpful if you could indicate in their diary whether they have been practising these at home.

Next week we plan on doing some food tasting in class and we are going to go on a local walk to look at the high street and specifically the bakery (we won't be going into any shops.). This is to enhance our English and our History work. We know that under normal circumstances we wouldn't ask for permission for this, however at this current time we would like to ask for you to consent to your child taking part. Please give consent via the scopay app. Any questions please speak to or email Mrs Nethersole (nnethersole@holytrinityhalstead.com).

Have a lovely weekend, see you on Monday!

Welcome to our Class Website Toucans!

Here is where you will find lots of information about things that are happening in school and this is where your homework will be set once we are a little more settled! Please keep an eye on this web page as well as the school app for updates specifically for Toucan Class as we will update it regularly.

A few notices from the first week...

This week your child will have come home with a Toucan communication book and a school reading book. As you know, reading at home really does make a huge impact on your child's reading progress and we encourage as much reading at home as possible. We know that family life can be very busy but if there is one thing that you can find 10 minutes to do then please read with your child. Any reading is brilliant whether it be a comic, phonics game, magazine or a book from home, we would love to know about it so please record it in their communication book. It doesn't always have to be them reading to you, it is also just as important for them to hear you reading them stories, they may seem too big for a bedtime story but they will love listening to you read!

Along with the reading, please record any messages for us or any other work that they have been doing at home, we would love to hear about it. Whilst we will try our best to look at the communication books every day if there are any urgent messages please let us know on the door or email us.

Our PE day is a Thursday, please make sure that your child comes to school ready in their PE kit, that earrings are removed or taped up and long hair is tied back. Mr Wiskin will be doing PE outside as much as possible so it would be useful for your child to have a plain, dark sweatshirt and jogging bottoms/ tracksuit when the weather gets chilly.

We know there has been a little confusion about water bottles but these are going to be coming home daily so that you can wash and refill them.

Please, please, please make sure that you name all of your child's school uniform, we will absolutely make sure that your child's uniform gets back to them if it is named, it makes that job impossible if it is not. We have already had a few missing cardigans or jumpers so please check.

Any questions about anything, please just ask on the door or email us on nnethersole@holytrinityhalstead.com or khandy@holytrinityhalstead.com

Please bear with us, things are a little different for us all at the moment and we are getting used to a different 'normal', your children have been brilliant with all the changes and we are very proud of them all. We have had a lovely first week in class and we are enjoying getting to know all our new little Toucans, have a lovely weekend and we will see you all on Monday!

Toucan Team,

Mrs Nethersole, Mr Handy, Mrs Mann and Miss Smith
