Day 6 began at 3:30 a.m. so that the immersion group could catch an early-morning flight to Mexico City.
During a purposefully well-planned seven-hour layover, the group was able to visit the Basilica of Our Lady of Guadalupe, a holy site in which multiple apparitions of the Virgin Mary are said to have been received in 1531 by an indigenous man named Juan Diego, with the command that a church be built in her honor. The last apparition resulted in a painted image on the inside of Juan Diego’s cloak which has became known as Our Lady of Guadalupe. Each year, hundreds of thousands of pilgrims from all over the world come to the church, the holiest in Mexico, which was given the status of a basilica 1904. The Old Basilica was constructed on the site of an earlier 16th-century church and was finished in 1709. When this basilica became dangerous because of the sinking of its foundations, a modern structure called the New Basilica was built nearby and the original image of the Virgin of Guadalupe is now housed in the New Basilica.
The immersion team was able to spend time in prayer at the Basilica and also enjoyed the beautiful gardens before heading back to the airport for their return flights to the U.S.
We are extremely grateful to everyone who prayed for the success of the trip, for our incredible hosts from La Luz Parish, and for the generosity of the Apostolic, Justice & Peace Fund, Congregation of Holy Cross United States Province who helped make this life-changing opportunity possible. ¡Viva México! ¡Viva Cristo!
