The city of Bamberg is quintessentially "German" in its appearance and vibe, but also undeniably international. Charming Romanesque and Baroque-style buildings stand alongside modern edifices, while German tourists walk the narrow streets of the old town (over 1000 yrs old!) within earshot of Czech, Italian, Korean, and English. How so? Because this UNESCO World Heritage Site known for its Oktoberfests and utterly picturesque Old City Hall is also an educational hub: students at the University of Bamberg comprise a community numbering more than 12,000, 14% of which are international, representing over 100 countries.
Holy Cross students who choose UniBamberg as their study abroad destination will find themselves in a charmingly, remarkably different kind of environment: university buildings are woven into the fabric of the city, as opposed to gathered and centralized on one definable campus. Yes, this "urban" topography hails back to the school's founding in 1647 and the ways in which it has grown in size and prestige over the centuries.
