Holy Cross students studying in Milan live in residential apartment buildings folded into the Navigli neighborhood of Milan. You will share an apartment with two-three other CIEE students, and potentially share a bedroom. You will also share a fully-equipped kitchen with your flatmates, and a bathroom. Each apartment contains a dishwasher and a washing machine. It may come furnished with a clothes dryer, but dryers are relatively uncommon in Italy. Each apartment comes supplied instead with drying racks for hanging up wet clothes.
Because you live in residential and not student housing, you can expect to get to know the neighbors on your floor and/or within your building - be they families, medical clinic on the first floor, or internationals. In all instances, you want to offer baseline courtesies as regards noise, cleanliness, and shutting securing the exterior front door ("portone") of your apartment building. All of this is really important, and much appreciated.
As for meals, they're on you. Meaning, you will have the chance to shop locally and cook for yourself. Definitely a learning experience and a wonderful cultural experience!
Because of this "self-catering" arrangement, you will not be charged for "board" (a meal plan) by Holy Cross for the period of time you study abroad.
As previously mentioned, you will have access to a washing machine in your apartment, but not necessarily a dryer. There will definitely be drying racks in each apartment.
It's on you. You are free to join a private gym while you study in Milan, but the fee is yours to pay out-of-pocket. In other words, a gym membership does NOT count as a "cultural" activity for which you can be reimbursed by the Study Abroad office.
Since you will not be charged the standard Holy Cross board fee (meal plan), we recommend that you reserve those funds as treat them as your "budget" for food and eating out. To help you budget accordingly, we recommend doing some quick googling - check out Numbeo.com, in particular - to get a sense of how much food and drinks cost in Milan (and elsewhere in Italy).
