Overview

The World Language Department believes in the importance of developing linguistic and cultural understandings in the study of language, which will help students to become active participants in the global society of the twenty-first century. We believe that our students will benefit in their thinking skills by learning how languages influence one another and how different cultures express ideas. The acquisition of a second language is imperative in today's global society. The internationalization of the economy has made us realize that the knowledge of foreign languages and cultures is essential for success in the international marketplace. Therefore, our foreign language program reflects the needs of the global economy and the multicultural workplace.

Students are provided with the opportunity to select from the languages offered to develop skills in all aspects of communication of the language selected. We focus our language instruction on communicative goals. The students are instructed through a proficiency-based communicative approach. Instruction will promote active participation through hands-on experiences, the acquisition of communicative skills, as well as the exploration of cultural aspects about the products, practices and perspectives of the people who speak the language.

World Language instruction is intended to provide experiences which attempt to foster respect and understanding of world cultures.
