Students in 5th grade receive approximately 90 minutes of literacy daily. Within the 90 minutes, we follow a balanced literacy approach to instruction, practice, and assessment based on the science of reading. The term "balanced" refers to an approach that incorporates a number of literacy components throughout the block; however, time spent within each facet of literacy varies.

Holmdel Township BOE has purchased the Into Reading balanced literacy program which follows a structured literacy approach. Additional standards-based materials include: MAP data from NWEA, Waggle, Freckle, students' independent reading books, as well as supplemental texts available through a variety of research-based websites: Commonlit.org, Newsela.org, Readworks.org
