This course will begin with the development of European settlements in North America and will end with American Manifest Destiny. Other major topics include the formation of our system of government and the growth of American slavery. A broad range of topics will be examined and students will be taught to think critically about American History. Students will learn to develop a sense of civic identity. Additionally, this course will provide students with an understanding of how bias and context lead to differing interpretations of historical events. By the end of the course, students will be able to think critically about major historical events after using both primary and secondary sources.
My personal goal of the course is to provide students with lessons and activities that make history interesting. As noted previously, there are fundamentally different perspectives regarding a single event. Ultimately, this course will include varied activities that cater to numerous learning styles.
