Community partners: HHS students and faculty
Since my project is focusing on specifically the HHS community, it would only make sense to work with people who know the school well from their own experiences of being here. Even though accommodating students is an issue that affects schools everywhere, I believe the first step in making a big difference for any student needs to hit close to home in order to truly change things.
My action plan is being based around student feedback of what their common unmet needs are. I have been working towards making sure my data is focused specifically on academic, mental, and social needs. Even though many students might not have disabilities of any kind, just about every student has had some point in their school experience where they were struggling and in need of help. It is also important to me that my data represents student experiences appropriately, since struggling to one student might simply be only getting 5 hours of sleep one night, but to another student struggling might mean that they are failing classes despite putting forth great effort. My action plan was originally focused on gathering student feedback, and trying to create spaces and resources for students who need them. After some reshuffling, I decided to make a change in plans, and I began working on materials to inform students of what is already available to them, and how they can access resources.
Learning
I'm hoping that from my project I can educate all disabled and/or struggling students what they are entitled to, what they can use to help cope with life and the stresses of school, and educate others on what it means to struggle and how they can help those who need it. I hope that by creating this project I have also had an impact on any students who are unsure of where to even start when trying to get support. I'm glad that students who might have previously chosen to not ask for direction and help to spare confusion, embarrassment, and additional stress. These students can access the resources within the building more anonymously and without having to ask someone else where to go and what to do-even if asking for help shouldn't ever be something to be ashamed of.
