Learning success begins with a designated work environment. Even in the small spaces most of us live in, there's usually at least a hallway, corner, closet or landing to set up as your child's "home office." Supplies do not need to be expensive to be useful and there is a lot of room for upcycling.

Desk or writing surface. If there's no room for a desk, you can use a flattened cardboard box, a sanded rectangle of scrap wood, or the top of a plastic storage tote as a portable desk.
School / art supplies organized in some kind of container. Containers can be upcycled from boxes, cans, or cups. There are also great finds at dollar stores, like shower caddies and baskets.
Good lighting. To reduce the possibility of eye strain, supply a good source of natural or lamp light.
Noise level. Minimize auditory distractions. If music is playing, opt for quiet instrumental music rather than songs with words.
Research suggests that completing schoolwork in bed can lead to problems with sleep patterns. If at all possible, we recommend finding a dedicated space tor academic work.
