Welcome to the Cross-Age Peer Mentoring Alliance or C.A.R.M.A! Your child has been selected as a CARMA apprentice. This organization seeks to inspire the CARMA apprentices to be the best version of themselves through genuine connection and peer modeling. Then, when they become high schoolers, we hope that they have the skills to become mentors themselves!
Mission and Values
Mission Statement: The mission of the CARMA organization is to create meaningful connections which inspire self reflection for personal growth, and empower members to have a positive impact on the world in which they live.
A boomerang returns to the person who throws it. -Vera Nazarian
The first value is also the program’s namesake. Many students who struggle with connectedness also have not been taught to appreciate how their actions impact the world around them. The key value that we hope to instill is that the good we give often comes back to us in unexpected ways. In other words, Karma!
The second value of C.A.R.M.A. will be that children can learn resilience which is defined as the ability to adapt in the face of adversity.
Lastly, we believe that to create a healthy community, the members need to mindfully teach the younger generation how to lead. We may never enjoy the shade of the tree, but we plant the seed for those who will.
What you can expect from your child’s coach?
They will meet once a month, in-person during a non-academic period.
They will communicate via adult-monitored emails.
They will practice important SEL skills like self-awareness, self-management, responsible-decision making, relationship skills and social awareness.
What coaches are not permitted to do
Coaches may not meet with apprentices outside of sanctioned meetings (IE: babysitting, social interactions, etc.). This is to ensure the safety of the coach and the apprentice. Coaches will be asked to report any unsanctioned interactions and any violation of this rule will result in the immediate dismissal of the coach and the apprentice.
Coaches will not be permitted to give unsanctioned gifts.
