Aims
Students who choose to study GCSE Physical Education will:
Develop theoretical knowledge and understanding of the factors that underpin physical activity and sport and use this knowledge and understanding to improve performance.
Understand how the physiological and psychological state affects performance in physical activity and sport.
Perform effectively in different physical activities by developing skills and techniques and selecting and using tactics, strategies and/or compositional ideas.
Develop their ability to analyse and evaluate to improve performance in physical activity and sport.
Understand the contribution that physical activity and sport make to health, fitness and well-being.
Understand socio-cultural influences that can affect people’s involvement in physical activity and sport.
Course Content
Theory
Applied anatomy and physiology – understanding of key body systems and how they impact on health, fitness and performance.
Movement analysis – understanding on the basic principles of movement and their effect on performance.
Physical training – understanding of the principles of training and different training methods to carry out personal exercise programmes.
Use of data – understanding on the use of data analysis in sport and physical activity.
Health, fitness and well-being – understanding of the benefits of taking part in physical activity and sport to improve health, fitness and well-being.
Sport psychology – understanding of the psychological factors that can affect performers and performance in sport.
Socio-cultural influences – understanding of the socio-cultural factors that can impact on physical activity and sport.
Practical
Students will be examined in three practical areas:
One team activity.
One individual activity.
One activity of their choice (either a team or individual activity).
Students will also complete a non-examined assessment by completing a personal exercise programme. This will involve planning, carrying out and evaluating a 6 week training programme.
Assessment Structure
1. Theory (60% of the overall mark)
Exam paper 1 – 1 hour and 45 minutes Exam paper 2 – 1 hour and 15 minute
2. Practical (30% of the overall mark)
Practical examination of three activities
3. Personal Exercise Programme (10% of the overall mark)
Please note you cannot take this course if you are taking Sport Studies.
