August 14, 2020 Virtual STEAM Workshop: Paper Engineering

12:00 - 1:00pm click to register

Join the Lewis Latimer House Museum in a virtual program in partnership with Summer in the City.

Participants will build amazing structures and explore engineering techniques using only paper. Participants will examine the objects around them in the spaces they inhabit and simplify them into geometric shapes. By breaking furniture and decor into primitive shapes, they will be able to build them out of paper using a basic set of techniques. They will use these techniques to create a new, remixed, or fantastic room space out of paper.

Ages 7 and above, families welcome.

August 21, 2020 Virtual STEAM Workshop: Paper Marbling

12:00 - 1:00pm click to register

Join the Lewis Latimer House Museum in a virtual program in partnership with Summer in the City!

Discover chemistry in art! Paper marbling is an ancient technique that produces patterns that imitate smooth marble and other stones. Through several centuries, people have applied marbled materials to various surfaces such as bookbinding and stationery. Part of its appeal is that each print is unique; you will never find an identical one in the world! Participants will learn paper marbling techniques using items you can find easily at home and how chemical reactions create unique prints through the craft of marbling paper.

Please have the following materials available: shaving foam (works better than shaving cream), shallow dish/pan, liquid watercolor paint (or watered-down food coloring), droppers, a chopstick/pencil/thin brush, card stock, scissors, a scraper (such as a square piece of cardboard), a cooking bowl/any round container, nail polish (assorted colors), soapy water, brush, water, cardboard/paper/watercolor paper. Optional: a shoe rack/clotheslines with clips to dry the paintings, straw.

Ages 7 and above, families welcome.

Pay as you wish. Details to join the live workshop will be provided closer to the event date. Registration required.
