*Please note that the above service learning journeys are subject to changes and modifications to accommodate reflections and facilitate student learning.
MP1
As an extension of the IPC unit, "Who Am I?", the MP1 students learnt that they could "fill buckets" by making HIS (their 2nd family) a better place for learning. Firstly, the students walked around the school to identify problems and in groups, they decided on the problems that they wanted to solve. Secondly, they brainstormed different solutions to the problems and chose one which they thought might work well. Then, the students carried out their plan. Finally, they reflected on what went well and what they could have done better.
During the elementary and secondary assemblies, the MP1 students gave suggestions that might help reduce lost items at school. They also paraded the Lost and Found items so that the owners could pick them up.
In connection to the IPC unit "The Magic Toymaker", the MP1 students decided to organise a Clothes and Toy Drive and with the help of the charity organisation, Iikoto, sell the used items. Part of the sales would be donated to the Japanese Red Cross Society. The students designed and made posters and a banner for the collection station, as well as labels for the collection boxes. They also wrote an email to the elementary families explaining the purpose of their service learning journey and asking for donations. Then the students sorted out the clothes and toys and put them neatly into cardboard boxes. The boxes were subsequently transported to Iikoto.
MP2
After discussing and discovering the different aspects of Living Together, the MP2 students went on a local walk to find problems or neighbourhood trends. From this walk, they planned their service around the needs of different language use and provided mini-libraries for the community. They took a second walk to find places that would be good for this.
In their opinion-writing lessons, the MP2 students wrote opinion letters to the Sumikawa residents and even the Mayor about their desire to set up community libraries in the neighbourhood.
Then MP2 started raising money through the Entrepreneur Fair, button sale and Spring Bazaar to fund this project.
They also made a website to document their service learning journey.
After designing and choosing the appropriate shelves, as well as collecting appropriate books, the first mini-library was placed outside the entrance of HIS.
MP3
For their first IPC unit, the students in MP3 became Champions for Change. They began with an investigation of HIS to see what issues they could find that MP3 could take on to make our school community a better place. The students created presentations in small groups to convince their peers that their service project was worth investing time and effort in. After the presentations, the students narrowed down to four project committees. These committees presented to Mr. Schlosser and gained approval to start on their service projects. Through this process, the students learned the importance of making change, but also how to research their ideas, anticipate problems and develop solutions, and follow the proposal, action plan, and follow-through process in HIS to make change occur. They are excited to bring their projects to life and keep HIS beautiful.
