From a young age, Mrs. Govoni has had a calling in mathematics, finding contentment and happiness in the logic that underlies all problems related to math. As a current calculus and algebra teacher at Hopkinton High School, Mrs. Govoni has been able to share her love of mathematics and its applications in engineering with us. Reflecting on her own experiences, she works with all students to demonstrate the opportunities that they have to advance careers in STEM education, regardless of their gender, ethnicity, or age. Working at the Wang Laboratories directly after college, her experience in computer science and technology has been shared through her discussion of applications in mathematics within computer science in her classroom. Her accomplishments include working on a Ph.D. in Mathematics Education and being nominated for the Presidential Awards for Excellence in Mathematics and Science Teaching (PAEMST). When working at a school that implemented their education in a traditional manner, her work to better their education system was well recognized within the community by teachers, parents, and the principal. Her passion for math has inspired us to pursue our own STEM careers.
In our time and age, with the rise of remote schooling, it has become more and more difficult to connect with teachers, parents, and elders within our communities. Finding opportunities to relate to teachers, and discovering motivation and inspiration to do the things we love has been inhibited by the stigmas and stereotypes that plague the world of STEM education. However, throughout our time at high school, we have found one role model that stands out to us the most: Mrs. Lorelle Govoni. As we spoke with her about opportunities for female advancement in STEM education, she recalled a time when her college advisors forced her to choose a career path as a teacher or secretary, without providing her the opportunity to develop skills in engineering. However, these events have guided her to help other students achieve their goals, regardless of who they are. Mrs. Govoni is well-known among students for her passion for mathematics, and watching her influence numerous students to mimic her interest and dedication, we were inspired to play the same role for others in a subject that we are passionate about.
