CGI (Cognitively Guided Instruction) Math is predominantly what we focused on this year in third grade. Story problems were an excellent way to get kids to really grasp what the math problem really was. Additionally, I began including "spicy problems" on the back in order to challenge my higher achieving students who often times finish their work ahead of the group. As a class we also came to the conclusion that we should begin to include Spanish translations when reading our story problem for our emergent bilingual students. Below are examples of student work when working through a story math problem.
Students focused on following a stoplight paragraph for all of the different types of paragraphs they learned throughout the year. Below are examples of opinionated, persuasive and informational writing that three of my students completed this year. One of my students required the voice to text feature to complete their writing along with graphics to help them read it back for self and peer critique.
Students had to write an "I am from..." poem for their Fall 2022 Roots to Rise exhibition. Below are student examples of how they chose to write their poem as well as, how detailed they wished to get, what style they chose and what they chose to include. Moreover, below that students needed to create infographics for their Spring 2023 Rise Up Changemakers exhibition. It is evident that students chose to get creative with their work and how they wished to format their facts and information.
