Project Purpose:
Building upon The Roots to Rise fall project when students explored the power of their own roots and stories. Students will explore the rise of a changemaker through developing an understanding of a changemakers roots story, the system or problem they are trying to disrupt, and what strategies they used to create change.
Essential Question(s):
How do community change makers transform the world around them?
How can I create change in my community?
Project Launch:
Exploring different community challenges
The project launch looked differently than our traditional project launch. As a class we determined a few different community challenges we recognized (houselessness, food insecurity, native plants and pollinators, plastic pollution and indigenous rights). We then dedicated each week toward researching that topic (read aloud books, infographics, informational videos, and informational articles).
Inviting community changemakers to our school to give us more information on their organization, why the problem is affecting our community and ways we can take action. Students were able to ask questions, get more information and meet the people who are passionate about change in our community.
Students were able to take small but meaningful action just within the walls of the classroom! The photo above shows the hygiene packs that they created for those who are experiencing houselessness. With the help of donations, we were able to create 24 hygiene packs to go to someone in need. This is one way that we took action to support organizations like PATH and Think Dignity.
The students were able to engage in meaningful field trips where they were able to participate in taking action for the challenge at hand outside of school. The photo above shows our field trip to PATH where we were able to make sandwiches for those experiencing houselessness. The students were also able to tour the facility and see how they are making change on a day to day basis.
As a group, students came up with their "we believe..." statement as well as what they know about the topic they're choosing to research further and what they wonder or hope to learn more about their topic they are choosing to research further. They also had the opportunity to draw any pictures on their poster that they felt directly related to the topic they were going to research.
Building upon The Roots to Rise fall project when students explored the power of their own roots and stories. Students will explore the rise of a changemaker through developing an understanding of a changemakers roots story, the system or problem they are trying to disrupt, and what strategies they used to create change. The students were required to pick any of the topics we came up with as a class to research further. They then needed to do their own research with the "research libraries" teachers provided for them. They then needed to write down all of the notes they found interesting in a research note catcher. Once they believed to have researched enough facts about the challenges and facts about the solutions, they began putting all of what they learned onto a giant research note catcher poster.
Following the research, students then needed to create their own infographics in which they state their "we believe..." statement they came up with as a group, 3-5 important facts they came up with as a partnership, 3-5 important solutions they came up with as a partnership, as well as changemakers in their community, their QR code, their sources, and 4-5 meaningful pictures that relate directly to their topic.
Once completed with the infographic, students then needed to write an informational letter to a business, important person, or company, requesting to display their infographic so that it spreads awareness within their community. At exhibition, students displayed their infographics and went through the information listed on them. Afterwards, they took their audience members to engage in an action step that would directly support their challenge at hand.
