For my historical research project I decided to focus on the relationship between a patriarchal society (the U.S.A) and their relationship with the queer community. I specifically highlighted the impact of persecution and prejudice the community has faced over the decades. The main event I decided to focus on was the Stone Wall Riots.
I came to this decision after first deciding I wanted to highlight an issue the social system, patriarchy has caused for a marginalized group of people. It took a little work-shopping to finalize because I did start broad, wanting to write about all the intersectionality of the role it played between, women, the queer community, and the black community. I eventually narrowed it down by choosing the community I felt I haven't explored as much as others to really dive into deep research for it. Once I did everything became clearer and I found my research question.
Research Question: How did a patriarchal society led to the prejudice and persecution of the LGBT+ Community?
Thesis Statement: The patriarchal society has labeled homosexuality “abnormal”, brewed a horrible relationship between queer people and the government, and persecuted those in attendance of the Stonewall Riots. This is a significant issue because no person should face discrimination and prosecution on the basis of simple attraction. This harms the lives of people who experience harassment because of this ideology, the lives of people who believe in this ideology, and the current political landscape.
I found my resources by finding books, PDF journals, and almost always something written by a Historian or the very least a Professor. I tackled it by using Google Scholars and other websites that let me get passed paywalls. I feel this was the best strategy to research my topic.
I however did find things challenging. I had both a well sourced primary source list while also feeling the information I found would be hard to connect with my topic. It felt like it was to meet a requirement rather than benefiting the writing. Which is also crazy because those sources I worried about were extremely helpful in the long run.
In my research essay, I primarily focus on the history and roots of homophobia and the patriarchy as a system, then specifically focus on the events of the Stonewall Riots and the aftermath.
I learn that The Stonewall Riots were a pivotal moment in American history for queer people who suffered under harsh discrimination throughout the 1960’s when the first anti gay law was introduced. These riots began June 28th 1969, and lasted five days. These days of blood and sweat were forever be an impact for LGBT+ activists that soon followed after.
This event sparked after the NYPD raided the Stonewall Inn an undercover gay bar that resisted the obscene and unnecessary force used by the police. The ethics have been debated of that first night and the reasoning for the raid but it spark a outcry from the community that week and raised visibility throughout the nation more than ever.

This thesis statement help lead the way to my body paragraphs because it helped briefly touch on what I wanted to go in depth about in the paragraphs. I used it as my north star when lost in the words to help me recall the topic of the paragraph. I also used it to refer back to my research notes about each point by finding the similar topics in earlier research outlines.
