Getting To Know My Object

Walking into Kobey’s swap meet I was convinced I wouldn’t find anything. I was planning to just look around but not to find anything in particular. My plan was to get something from my trip to Mexico specifically an item made out of leather or porcelain. I remember every time my grandmother would come home from Mexico, she would always bring me a gift. It was typically a little porcelain animal with a bobble head, a leather bag/wallet/shoes, or a mini tea set made of pottery. I remember sitting on her floral fluffy mattress as we played la cosinita and sipped on our imaginary tea.

As I made my way through the first aisle my friends stopped at one of the stands. The stand had a white canopy and looked like a poorly made yard sale. I stood there, looking around at all the electronics that no longer functioned. I looked down to see a shiny small box that caught my eye. It was like a diamond in the rough. It was a small rectangular glass box with gold trims. I made an impulsive decision. I thought about it for two seconds and then found myself asking the seller, “How much is this?” but in my head, I was doubting the item, “Uhhh should I wait? I don’t know if I should get it but I really like it.” The lady said, “3 dollars” and I responded with, “Okay, I'll take it.” I thought that finding something I’d really like would be as hard as finding a needle in a haystack.

I picked up my glass box studying all of its details as it laid in my hands. I think it was made out of compounded sand compressed together and was later soldered together. None of the walls are perfectly aligned. It has a couple of plants inside that are all shades of pink. The box stands on three little small circles, I’m not sure if I bought it like that or if it fell off on my way to school. Regardless of what happened to the fourth leg I really like my object. It’s very vintage looking, it’s something you would find in an antique store.

It reminds me of a jewelry box. There are a couple of reasons as to why I bought this item. I really like jewelry and jewelry trays but I also got it because I really like things that are antique and vintage. As I walked away from the stand I looked down at my shiny glass box and began to think of my sister. My sister is as classy and chic as Audrey Hepburn. Sometimes we even joke about her being born in the wrong era. That is the main reason as to why I bought it because the more I looked at it the more it reminded me of her.
