Fall 2021, Gary & Jerri-Ann Jacobs High Tech High
While investigating the water nearest us, visiting the San Diego River, exploring tide pools, snorkeling around a student-made reef, discovering San Diego's drinking water sources, and listening to the ocean, students answered three essential questions:
Where is our water?
How does water affect us?
How can we affect water?
Students started by learning where our local water is, spent time focusing on how we as San Diegans affect that water, and transversed how it affects us. In order to integrate their knowledge of math, physics and humanities, students dived deep into topics of sustainability, development, economics, water purification and more.
Field Trips!
Field trip to Ocean Beach, where students practiced yoga, did some research, and got out in the sun for a day!
Humans of Water
To tackle the third essential question, "How can we affect water?" students conducted interviews with local professionals and people who have a connection to water, whether it be through conservation, sustainability, purification, infrastructure, or a good old surf at the beach. To practice, we analyzed elements of a Humans of New York style interview and what makes a good portrait photograph. Students conducted a more low-stakes interview with themselves, then a family member, then finally, their chosen professional or water aficionado. The results, shown in some of the slides above as a working draft, were displayed at exhibition.
Letter to a Representative / Op-Ed piece
One of our final products for this semester was a letter to a representative or an op-ed that was sent to be published regarding students' chosen topic surrounding conservation. Students chose between researching and forming a stance for change about plastics, overfishing, climate change, or freshwater pollution. We are so proud of our students; some of which received responses from Congress!
