Internship Site Visit
1) What is the name of your internship site? What does your site do?
I will be interning at Media Arts Center San Diego. They are a non-profit organization that has programs on film making and they also help host film festivals such as the San Diego Latino Film Festival. Their mission statement is "Providing new media tools and channels to create equitable and engaged communities where underserved voices are heard."
2) Who is your mentor? What was it like meeting them?
My mentor is Edwin, he's very friendly and welcoming and I look forward to him helping me throughout my internship!
3) What will you be doing during your internship?
Here, I will be helping out with setting up and listening in on film classes and completing other tasks like organizing equipment and cleaning up the space.
4) Any hopes and fears for internship?
My biggest hope for internship is to get to learn more about the different equipment and things like lighting strategies so that I can improve my knowledge on the things I will be using when working in the field of film and photography.
Week 1
1/12/24 What are you most concerned about in your internship?
The first "week" (3 days) of my internship here at MACSD have concluded and the one thing I am concerned about is being able to manage my time to its fullest in order to complete all off the tasks that have been assigned to me. My mentor Edwin has very kindly provided me with a schedule of what I am asked to do every hour of the day for next week when he starts teaching his classes for the film program. That's another thing that I feel that I might find difficult in the next coming weeks as after the classes the students are able to check out equipment and I, along with another person, will be the ones to basically hand it to them along with when they return them to put them back where they belong. With this being one off my main responsibilities, I worry that I will mess up and not recognize something missing whenever I am checking back in the equipment that is being returned. But hopefully, even with all this stress, I will be able to correctly fulfill the task.
Week 2
1/17/24? Describe your internship project. What will you be doing? What will the final product look like? Which skills (academic, creative, technical) will you utilize and/or develop as you do the project. How will the project benefit the organization?
My internship project is going to consist of taking multiple pictures that will be displayed on the walls around my internship site. The skills that I am using to accomplish this are creative in the fact that I am essentially creating demonstrations of art through the lens of photography. The way that I see it being a benefit to the organization is the way that it provides a better sense of an artistic feel inside as there isn't really much displayed around the site. I am looking forward to completing it and hope that the people around also enjoy the pictures that will be put up.
1/17/24? What is the biggest challenge you face at your internship?
The biggest challenge I have faced at my internship is making sure that I hand out every piece of equipment to the students in the class. I find it difficult sometimes because everyone is coming up at the same time to get a set of equipment that could consist of up to 6 different things. And even though I have someone else helping me hand it out I still find that we forget to hand out every piece of equipment that is needed for the lesson that day and it gets me kind of stressed out.
Week 3
1/25/23 Who benefits from the work that you do at internship? How and/or why?
I would say that the work I do here at my internship site helps with keeping the students' experience as best as possible. I say this because I help out with setting up the classroom, making sure the space is clean, and handing everyone their equipment for the day. All the stuff that I do essentially helps keep things running smoothly which is all apart of the class experience.
1/26/23 Describe one challenge that arose this week at your internship site. How did your mentor and their colleagues solve this problem?
The biggest challenge we faced was yesterday when we were setting up for the class. There were an expected 16 students coming in and we needed 8 of each piece of equipment (1 for each pair of 2 people), but when I was checking the equipment there was only 5 of each. So, when I told my mentor he came up with a solution to split them up into 4 groups of 3 and one group of 4 so that the equipment would be enough to supply everyone. And if I'm being honest, I think it worked out pretty well because it kind of made things quicker with the larger groups.
1/26/23 What are you thankful for in your internship experience?
I would say there are many things I am thankful for in my internship. Most importantly for my mentor Edwin for helping me throughout my internship and allowing me to borrow a camera so that I can experiment with and practice taking photos like the ones I have posted throughout my weekly blogs. I am also thankful for the rest of the people here for being so friendly and welcoming to the space and making it feel like a safe space.
Week 4
1/29/23 What are social interactions like in your workplace?
At my workplace the social interactions aren't too uncommon, especially because it's a creative space. There are usually times in the day where my mentor is collaborating to get things ready for the film class that they teach. There have also been times where we go shopping for things that we need like last week when we went out to buy props to have an anti-valentine's day photoshoot for one of the classes. Other times we might go out to purchase groceries like snacks that the students can have before the class starts.
1/30/23 Are you planning to continue working with your internship site or mentor after internship is over?
Although I would love to continue helping out here with the classes and equipment, I don't think I will be able to due to the schedule of things around here interfering with school and sports as the hours here are during the schooldays till the evening. But despite that, hopefully I will be welcomed back to photograph an event in the future!
Week 5
How might you continue your internship experiences beyond the scope of the HTHMA internship? Will you continue working with your internship beyond February of 2024?
I will most definitely be using the techniques that I have learned from being here and using the equipment in the future. I really believe that I will continue to pursue a career in photography in the future whether it be a job or just a hobby. The things that I have learned from just using the equipment that I was allowed to borrow has helped me to advance in my overall photographic skills. And then the access to photoshop here has also allowed me to gain experience with editing my photos to make them even better than without it.
Describe what you are most thankful for in your internship experience. What new appreciations have you gained through internship and how did you develop these?
I am most thankful for the opportunity to be able to intern here in the first place. I have greatly appreciated the ability to be able to borrow and use a camera as well because it has been one of the biggest reasons that I have been able to learn everything about how to use a camera on manual exposure. I think the biggest thing I have learned to appreciate is the art of filmmaking and how meaningful it is to people. I felt this especially after the film premiere that I attended on Saturday.
