Film, Digital and Media Experimentation
The Photography program offers students a comprehensive sequence of courses that explore both traditional and digital approaches to the art of photography. The introductory course in black-and-white photography focuses on the fundamentals of film photography and darkroom techniques. Students will learn how to operate 35mm manual cameras, develop film, and print photographs in a traditional darkroom, with emphasis on composition, lighting, and creative expression.
Building on this foundation, advanced courses allow students to refine their skills in darkroom techniques while also exploring digital photography. Students will work with digital cameras, digital design, image manipulation, and Photoshop editing to create professional-quality photographs. Emphasis is placed on developing technical skills, conceptual thinking, and personal expression through both film and digital mediums.
Throughout the sequence, students will engage in critiques, portfolio development, and creative projects designed to expand their artistic voice. Those who complete the full Photography sequence are eligible to take AP 2D Art and Design as seniors, where they can further develop their portfolios and earn college credit.
