Since the start of Elul- אלול we have been very excited to learn about the special holidays that occur during the month of Tishrei- תשרי. The various activities offered by iTaLAM have helped us recall the knowledge we gained in 1st grade while also introducing new information and skills.
Shanah Tovah! תשפ"ה 5785
After learning about what to prepare for Rosh Hashanah and the significance of appropriate holiday wishes, each student created a card and decorated a wooden Hamsah. They used these creations to extend their wishes of Shanah Tova to their families.

Creating Shana Tova cards for our classmates on the iTaLAM website was a fun and enriching experience. Students worked on their typing skills and enhanced their ability to express themselves in Hebrew. They enjoyed choosing colorful designs ensuring each card was unique and special. As they shared their creations, a sense of pride and accomplishment filled the room, reminding everyone of the importance of community and connection in learning.
Ma Omer Hashofar B'Rosh Hahanah?
We are reading a story about the significance of the Shofar on Rosh Hashanah. The story teaches us the blessing associated with its blowing, the various names for the sounds made by the shofar (Tekiah, Sh'varim, T'ruah), and the steps involved in the process of Teshuva.

Aseret Yemei Teshuvah
The days between Rosh Hashanah and Yom Hakippurim are known as Aseret Yemei Teshuvah. During this time, we focus specifically on Teshuvah (repentance), Tefillah (prayer), and Tzedakah (charity). We learned a poem that guides us on how to behave during this period. The activities in iTaLAM helped us count the days, record ourselves reading the poem, and identify important information within the text.

Fun games on iTalam helped us summarize the Tishrei Unit
The iTaLAM animated story "Why Do We Sit in the Sukkah?" helped us understand the significance of the mitzvah of sitting in the Sukkah. From the story, we learned that this mitzvah is rooted in the Torah, reflecting the journey Bnei Yisrael took in the desert and God's actions to support and protect them. This story also helped us identify past and present tense in Hebrew.
Our Sukkot field trip to Hogan Farms was a lot of fun!!

In preparation for Simchat Torah, we read an engaging book about “Hillel Ha’shoel”. In the book, Hillel asks his Family why they are Happy on Simchat Torah. Hillel concluded that he agreed with all the good reasons provided by his family members and added that he is excited to begin learning Parashat Hashavua in class after Simchat Torah.
We are working with our new Hebrew workbook, "Tov Bakita U'Babayit."

During the month of Shvat, we have been busy learning about Tu Bishvat, the New Year for the trees in Israel. We started the unit with a song we learned last year to ignite our memory and recall what are the parts of the tree (ie: trunk, branches, leaves, etc.). The second graders were excited to share their knowledge with the children in Oak class. Watch them singing in the video.
We continued to expand our vocabulary and practice Hebrew reading and comprehension with the book “All Types of Trees”. We learned about the different shapes of trees (round עגול, triangle משולש, egg-shaped ביצה), their branches (straight ישרים or not, facing up עולים למעלה or down יורדים למטה). We learned about types of leaves, shapes of various fruit. and their special products (i.e.:juice, jams, cakes, etc.). Students concluded the unit by drawing a tree and writing a descriptive paragraph using the new adjectives they learned. They did a great job!
On Tu Bishvat, in Israel, it’s a custom to plant trees, eat fruits, and give tzedaka. Each student had a chance to create a small tree from modeling clay and “plant” it on the map of Israel. The mini trees were created step by step, including all the parts of the tree we have learned.

On our Tu Bishvat The almond trees are blooming in Israel. Students made white and pink paper flowers for our bulletin board tree to depict this beautiful sight.
With Ms. Halperin, students planted Basil seeds in empty fruit can. The cans were covered with Ben Gurion Head stickers provided by The Jewish National Fund organization.
We can already see the seeds sprouting!
During this month we also raised over $800 for planting trees in Israel (horray!) and strengthen our connection to the land.
We start our mornings with greeting each other with בָּרוּךְ הַבָּא (Baruch habah) or בְּרוּכָה הַבָּאָה (Brucha Haba-ah)
The beginning of second grade is all about transitioning to cursive writing. We started with writing our names in cursive.

The Best House on the Street

After reading the stories "Shahar likes Blue" and "Sharona likes Red", students chose their favorite color Yalkoot (backpack), and drew items they may have inside in the same favorite color. They finishd with labeling the items in Hebrew.

We raised money for the Jewish National Fund’s Tu BiShvat campaign! All proceeds went to the rehabilitation of the Jerusalem forests.
