In Nursery and Reception we focus on using singing to develop our pitch, pronunciation and performance confidence. We also explore different instrumental sounds and begin to play simple beats and rhythms.
In Year 1 we explore a range of classroom percussion instruments to learn about basic musical notation for rhythm. We read and compose our own rhythms as well as using different timbres to compose music for scenes. We learn about famous composers and a range of popular musical instruments.
In Year 2 we use African Drums and Tuned Percussion instruments to develop our musical skills in purposefully changing elements such as dynamics, tempo, rhythm and timbre. We accurately read and create short beats and rhythms as well as notating performances using graphics. We explore a range of famous composers and learn about musical intention.
In Year 3 we use recorders to demonstrate control of pulse and rhythm as well as developing our fluency in reading rhythms and melodies on the stave. We compose and perform short melodic songs as well as developing skills when performing to an audience.
In Year 4 we use ukuleles to develop our dexterity when doing two things at once such as playing melody and accompaniment. We consolidate our reading of staff notation for melody and rhythm as well as performing in parts. We demonstrate proficiency in an instrument and become more confident to sing and play simultaneously.
In Year 5 we use a performance at the 02 Arena as an opportunity to develop our singing and performance skills when presenting to an audience. We analyse and appraise famous songs and are able to use music technology to compose similar representations.
In Year 6 we consolidate all of the skills learned throughout our school journey. We use music technology purposefully and are able to maintain a part in a song using our voices or an instrument. We are able to accurately recognise notes on the stave and interpret intent of music through study of a range of composer and genres.
