We are a brother and sister team trying to help children from Favelas in Coque, Brazil.

But, first we like to answer some obvious questions...

1. What are Favelas?

Favelas are Brazilian Shantytowns or Slums. More here..

2. Why Coque in Recife?

Coque is an impoverished community in Recife, amongst the poorest and most violent in Brazil. Recife is a beautiful beach town in North Eastern Brazil where the continent of Brazil juts into the Atlantic ocean (See map below). My mom is from the area.

3. Who are the kids?

The kids approximately 10-20 years of age are offered enrollment into a music program called "Orquestra Crianca Cidada" along with access to schools, health insurance and meals. Kids learn various string instruments and the best get to play nationally and internationally such as @Vatican, UN and other distinguished venues. More here

4. What is OCC?

Short for "Orquestra Crianca Cidada" which translates to "Orchestra Child Citizen" is a social project that was started over 10 years ago by a local judge. Over 700 children have benefited over the years. About 275 children are enrolled in the program currently. More here

5. Who are we?

Neil is a senior (Lower 6th) at Harrow School, UK and Megan is a 9th grader at Herricks High School, Long Island. We visit Coque multiple times annually for a week a time. Through the rest of the year, we have weekly video sessions whereby we continue to teach and interact with the kids. We also involve several of our friends in the project. 6. Why should you join us (Or even some other social project)?
