On Monday, 31st March, Miss Probert hosted a special Community Focused Event at Heolddu, bringing together key members of our wider support network to share best practice and highlight the strides we are making in strengthening community connections.
The morning was a huge success, with representatives from Bargoed Masons, Citizens Advice, Platfform, members of the governing body and the families of our Young Carers in attendance. Their presence and input reflected the strong partnerships we are building beyond the school gates. Throughout the event, it was frequently noted that our students are a credit to Heolddu, a sentiment we are incredibly proud to echo.
We are thrilled to announce that, thanks to Miss Probert’s leadership and the collective effort of our school community, Heolddu has been awarded Silver in our first application for the Community Focused Schools Award. This recognition marks an exciting milestone, and we are now setting our sights on achieving Gold.
As we approach the end of the academic year, Miss Probert is also appealing for any donations of outgrown school uniforms, particularly from Year 11 leavers who no longer need theirs. Donations are very much appreciated and can be dropped off at the school reception.
Thank you, as always, for your continued support.
We are excited to announce the opening of our brand-new, state-of-the-art music recording studios! These fully-equipped, soundproofed pods feature the best recording technology, providing an ideal space for bands and musicians to record their work. With top-tier equipment and a professional setup, our students now have access to a creative environment that will inspire and support their musical talents.
We’re proud to share that Levi and Courtney have successfully completed their climb of Pen-y-Fan, a fantastic achievement and a testament to their determination and spirit.
In a heartfelt gesture, and following the recent passing of Ms Louise Watkins, a much-loved Welsh teacher at Heolddu, they chose to donate the funds raised from their challenge to Ms Watkins’ family. This thoughtful act has been received with deep appreciation and reflects the kind and compassionate values we’re proud to see in our students.
Well done, Levi and Courtney, on both your climb and your kindness.

Our extracurricular activities programme offers something for everyone, providing pupils with the opportunity to explore new interests, develop their skills, and stay active throughout the week. Whether you're a budding musician, a sports enthusiast, or a creative mind, there's always something exciting on offer.
Our extracurricular programme is designed to complement classroom learning, providing a balance of fun, fitness, and focus. It's a fantastic way for pupils to meet new friends, improve their skills, and make the most of their school experience.
Our extracurricular activities programme is updated regularly, so be sure to keep checking our website for any updates.
The Caerphilly Uniform Exchange CIC is running a pop-up shop on Bargoed High Street throughout March, offering both new and pre-loved school uniforms at hugely reduced prices. It’s a brilliant initiative that not only supports local families financially but also helps reduce waste by rehoming outgrown items. Families are encouraged to donate any unwanted school uniform directly to the Bargoed store. The organisation can also collect lost property or donations from the school free of charge. They work closely with Caerphilly Council’s family liaison team to provide free uniform support packages for the most vulnerable children. We’re pleased to support this valuable community project and encourage all families to get involved if they can.
Additionally, if you would like to donate any uniforms that pupils have outgrown, please hand them in at the main reception. Your donation can help other pupils who may not have access to appropriate clothing. Additionally, if any parents or carers would like to access the uniform bank at Heolddu, please let us know. We want to ensure that every pupil has access to the clothing they need to succeed in their education.
From Tuesday, 1st April 2025, there will be a 5% increase in the cost of secondary school meals, in line with changes across Wales. This decision reflects ongoing financial pressures faced by local authorities, but the council remains committed to delivering healthy, high-quality meals for all pupils.
The new prices are:
Pupil meals: £2.94 (was £2.80)
Adult meals: £4.06 (was £3.87)
Join us in the LRC every day after school from 2:50 – 3:45 PM for a quiet space to focus, get work done, and receive support. See you there!

This production was a wonderful showcase of talent, teamwork, and creativity, and we can’t wait to see what our students will do next in future shows!
Two of our Year 7 pupils, Ella-May and Layla, recently took charge of four exciting transition sessions for pupils from our feeder primary schools. Showing brilliant leadership, creativity, and technical skill, they designed and led a fun challenge using LEGO Spike kits, where pupils built and coded a Rhino Robot.
The sessions gave younger learners a hands-on introduction to robotics and coding, as well as a glimpse into the engaging and innovative learning experiences on offer at Heolddu. The LEGO Spike kits were kindly donated by Coleg Gwent through the HIVE project – an engineering initiative we’re proud to be part of.
The HIVE project promotes STEM through exciting, practical activities and helps strengthen links between schools, colleges, and industry. We are incredibly proud of Ella-May and Layla for their confidence and enthusiasm, which made the sessions such a success. Their efforts have left a lasting impression on our future pupils and showcased the talent we have here at Heolddu.
Thanks to this exciting partnership, we’ll be introducing Engineering as a new Year 10 option from September as part of the HIVE project.
This term has been a busy and creative one in the Textiles department! Students at KS3 have worked hard to complete a variety of imaginative and skillful outcomes, while our KS4 learners have been focused and dedicated as they prepare for their final exams.
Miss Probert and Miss Hugill have thoroughly enjoyed teaching all students through the carousel and are immensely proud of the high-quality work produced across all year groups. Well done to everyone for your creativity, effort, and enthusiasm!
At Heolddu Comprehensive School, we are proud to share a remarkable collaboration between our school and the timber industry. Facing a shortage of resources and funding, we reached out for support, and in response, International Plywood generously provided timber, plywood, and panel products. This contribution has been vital in ensuring the continuation of our vocational training courses for students. The partnership, led by our own Miss Probert and her father, Wayne Probert, highlights the powerful impact of community and industry working together to support education. We are incredibly grateful for the dedication and generosity of International Plywood, which has helped provide essential resources and opportunities for our students.
The Design Department recently hosted a special thank-you event to recognise the generosity of several companies that have supported the department throughout the past year. Through donations of equipment, tools, materials, and funding, these companies have played a vital role in enriching the educational experience for our students and enabling them to be able to create innovative projects that they otherwise would not have been able to.
The event, which was held in the Design Department, was attended by representatives from the generous companies, including Coleg Gwent, Ante-Holz, Joyner Group, International Plywood, and John SISK and Son. The visitors were greeted by our Headteacher, Mrs Davies, Chair of Governors, Lynne Thomas, Department Governor, Jenn East, and Deputy Headteacher, Mr Johnston.
Throughout the event, attendees had the opportunity to see firsthand the incredible work that our students have been able to produce thanks to the resources provided by these supporters. The students showcased a variety of skills that they have developed during the past year in the Design Department.
The event was a celebration of collaboration and community spirit, with students, staff, and sponsors coming together to acknowledge the impact of these donations. Refreshments were served, providing a relaxed and welcoming atmosphere where conversations and connections were made between the school and the generous companies who have made such a difference.
A huge thank you to our sponsors for their unwavering support. The Design Department is looking forward to continuing its work with these fantastic partners to provide even more opportunities for our students to grow and succeed in the world of design and technology, construction and engineering.
We look forward to seeing what our students will achieve in the coming year and are deeply grateful for the ongoing support from our community partners.
This term, our Year 8 SEREN learners have taken part in an exciting project focused on developing their debating and critical thinking skills. Working closely with our ITE (Initial Teacher Education) students, the group explored a range of thought-provoking topics as part of the Oxplore programme, a gateway initiative from the University of Oxford.
Thanks to the dedication and enthusiasm of both the students and our ITE team, the project was a huge success. Every student who participated earned a Certificate of Excellence, recognising their hard work and insightful contributions.
Miss Probert would like to extend a heartfelt thank you to the ITE students for their commitment to our learners’ growth and for helping make this opportunity such a rewarding experience.
This term, a group of our talented Year 9 students – Austin Waythe, Isabella Wayte, Jake Thomas, Lexie Derraven and Dewi Miles – took part in the Seren Academy Debate Competition, held at Islwyn High School.
In the lead-up to the event, the pupils attended a workshop focused on developing debating techniques and understanding assessment criteria. This session proved invaluable in preparing them for the challenges ahead.
On 4th February, they competed in a series of debates for the chance to represent the region at the national finals in Oxford. They debated a range of challenging motions, including the effectiveness of prisons, the role of compulsory school subjects, and school security measures.
Although narrowly missing out on a place in the finals – losing by just four points to Islwyn – our students showed incredible confidence, passion and teamwork throughout the day. We’re incredibly proud of their efforts and hope opportunities like this continue to inspire more learners in the future.
Congratulations to our Year 12 students who have officially graduated from the Brilliant Club Scholars Programme at the University of Bristol! We’re incredibly proud of their hard work and dedication – a fantastic achievement that reflects their commitment to academic excellence.
Was great to start our new Hockey After School Club! 🏑 A great turnout, and we hope it continues to be as successful as today!
The girls performed great today! First game of rugby for these girls, and they played excellently. A very bright future ahead for this group. 13 tries in 3 games, da iawn pawb.
It wasn’t our day today, but what a fight these girls put up! To walk away as runners-up in the Caerphilly Cup is outstanding, especially considering some of these were only on their 2nd game of football ever! Well done, girls – we are so proud of you. @HeoldduPE
A huge shout out to @boXXerworld for my new fight kit, ready for the Championships.

Not a privilege I get too often with such a small community, but congratulations to our very own Freya Perry, who represented Wales U18’s today. An achievement only a few get to experience, but awarded to those who work tirelessly for it. Well done, Freya – we’re all really proud of you!
Great day out for my Year 7’s today. First experience at 7’s rugby and played well against some very strong teams. 10 tries scored and 1 great win. Da iawn boys!
Top effort today from Year 8. Runners-up out of 12 schools. Really strong performances from all the boys. 29 tries scored, 4 dominant wins, and falling short in the final. Player of the tournament: Zak Pearson, who scored an impressive 14 tries. Da iawn pawb!
