Heolddu Comprehensive School is thrilled to celebrate its 50th anniversary this academic year, engaging our community through social media to gather old photos and memorabilia from former pupils. The overwhelming response has turned our school into a nostalgic treasure trove, showcased in the Coleman room with an impressive array spanning five decades of Heolddu's history. This journey through time not only serves as a heartwarming trip down memory lane but also as a testament to the collective achievements that define our school.
In tandem with these celebrations, we hosted a logo redesign competition, won by Dewi Miles. Dewi's design, now featured across all school branding and social media, beautifully encapsulates our school's five decades of excellence, symbolising unity and pride in commemorating our rich history. As the academic year unfolds, we eagerly anticipate more shared memories, exciting events, and the continued honouring of Heolddu's enduring legacy. See below the amazing talent Heolddu pupils have shown in their submissions.

Students recently participated in the Student Health and Wellbeing Survey conducted by the School Health Research Network in collaboration with Cardiff University, Welsh Government, Public Health Wales, and Cancer Research UK. This biennial survey plays a crucial role in gathering valuable information to create a comprehensive Student Health and Wellbeing Report for our school. The insights gained from this survey will aid us in enhancing our efforts to improve the overall health and wellbeing of our students. Thank you to all students who contributed to this important initiative.
Dear Parent/Carer,
The School Health Research Network is led by Cardiff University in partnership with Welsh Government, Public Health Wales and Cancer Research UK. Every two years, schools in the Network are invited to take part in the Student Health and Wellbeing Survey. The information collected in the survey is used to compile a Student Health and Wellbeing Report for each school, which supports their work to improve their students’ health and wellbeing.
Your child’s school is taking part in the Student Health and Wellbeing Survey this term. The survey is being managed by Ipsos on behalf of Cardiff University and is completed online under the supervision of a member of school staff. It contains questions on health behaviours, including diet, physical activity, smoking, alcohol, drugs, school life and relationships. Students in Year 9 and above only will be asked a small number of questions relating to sexual behaviour. Each student chooses whether or not they want to complete the survey and they can omit any question they do not want to answer.
At the end of the survey, students are asked to give their name, date of birth and postcode. This enables researchers to connect students’ responses across different rounds of the two-yearly survey, in order to investigate how and why health and wellbeing change through adolescence. It is made clear to students that they do not have to provide this information if they do not want to and, if given, it will only be seen by a small number of researchers at Cardiff University and Ipsos.
Students will also be asked if researchers can use their survey answers for data linkage research, meaning their answers will be anonymously linked to other data that is routinely collected about them, e.g. education records, and this will be held and reported at an anonymous level. The school will show students a video about this, which you can view here: www.shrn.org.uk/gdpr along with further information about data linkage. If you cannot access the video or website, please contact Matt Davies at shrn@cardiff.ac.uk or 029 2087 4433 to request a leaflet. Your child can say they do not want their answers to be used for data linkage if they want to.
All data will be treated in accordance with the Data Protect Act (2018) and the General Data Protection Regulations, and you can read our data privacy notice here: www.shrn.org.uk/gdpr The survey is strictly confidential unless a student response raises concerns about their welfare, in which case we will notify the school’s safeguarding officer if we have the student’s name. Cardiff University use the survey data to compile the Student Health and Wellbeing Reports and for research into adolescent health. The Student Health and Wellbeing Reports contain only aggregated data, e.g. the percentage of Year 7 boys who eat breakfast daily.
I hope that you will be happy for your child to take part. If you have any concerns, wish to see the survey questions or withdraw your child from the survey or from data linkage research, please notify school reception as soon as possible.
Yours sincerely,
Professor Simon Murphy
We had a fantastic group of pupil librarians in 2022 - 2023. They were enthusiastic and skilled pupils who ensured that the Learning Resources Centre operated smoothly. These reliable pupil librarians ensured that the LRC was open to Heolddu pupils at break and lunchtimes throughout the year. They also supported events in the LRC and the pop-up bookshop in activity week. These pupil librarians are a fantastic asset to Heolddu and were rewarded, in July, with a book and certificate.
During activity week, we held our very own pop-up bookshop! Storyville, an independent bookshop in Pontypridd, brought an extensive range of books for pupils to select. Every pupil received the book they had chosen for free, thanks to the support of Heolddu governors. What an amazing way for Heolddu pupils to enjoy and develop their reading!
Our Year 11 team showcased an impressive performance, securing a fantastic 2-1 victory in our inaugural Welsh Cup match. A special shoutout to Jay Taylor, our standout goalkeeper, who earned the well-deserved title of Man of the Match. Goals from Jayden Griffiths and Aiden Carter sealed our success on the field.
Congratulations to our Under 15's Girls Football team for securing their first win on their away game to Risca, with a fantastic score of 3-0, propelling them into Round 2 of the Caerphilly Cup. Our teams not only looked amazing but played with remarkable prowess in their newly arrived kit, clinching a resounding victory. Despite the chilly weather, both squads showcased exceptional teamwork and determination. A special shoutout to the outstanding players of the match, Cassie and Ffion, whose stellar performances truly shone through. You all not only looked the part but played it brilliantly!
It was a fantastic afternoon of football as we welcomed special guests from FA Wales and the esteemed Welsh football manager, Gemma Grainger, to our school. They visited to witness the incredible work of our BEfootball coaches from Youth Sport Trust. A standout moment was the outstanding session crafted and led by our talented year 9 pupil, Ffion F. A big thanks to everyone involved for making this event memorable and inspiring!
In another remarkable display of skill and determination, our Year 11 team secured a thrilling 6-5 victory against Pencoed in the Welsh Cup. The resilience and talent exhibited by our players were truly commendable.
Da iawn pawb!
Congratulations to Harry Moore of Year 7 for the remarkable achievement of becoming the Welsh Boxing champion (35.5kg)!
Representing Gelligaer Amateur Boxing Club, Harry has brought home the championship, making history as the club's first Welsh champion in the past four years. His dedication and success are truly commendable.
Ardderchog, Harry!
We commemorated Remembrance Day with a poignant ceremony. At 11 am, we united in a #TwoMinuteSilence, paying solemn tribute to the service and sacrifice of the Armed Forces community. Our Head Student, Harvey Jones, played a significant role by laying our school wreath at the war memorial, symbolizing our collective respect and remembrance. This heartfelt event, held in reflection of the past, underscores our commitment to ensuring that the contributions of the Armed Forces will forever be ingrained in our school's memory.
"Thank you, Heolddu Comprehensive School, for your support in the Poppy Appeal 2023/4. Your public spiritedness and your concern for those vets less fortunate than us are heartwarming.
Your support will ensure the treatment of a man or woman who, while defending our country, were injured. You will never know them. So let me say on their behalf, thank you for remembering. God bless."
This year's Annual Awards Evening was a true celebration of achievement at Heolddu Comprehensive School! Congratulations to all the awarded pupils for their outstanding accomplishments. This term our Sixth Form Leadership Team has been working hard, supporting school events, and organising their initiatives. They have assisted with the Year 7 transition, contributed to fundraising events, supported the Halloween disco, and assisted the LRC at lunchtimes. In November, they participated in the Poppy Appeal, selling poppies at Morrisons in Bargoed. They have been a mature and effective team, representing the concerns of the wider sixth form. Recently, they organized drop-in sessions for pupils, with the support of Tyler and Alfie in Year 12, for Mental Health Week. In all their endeavours, they have demonstrated professionalism, dedication, and empathy, serving as true role models for our younger learners. I would like to take this opportunity to thank them for their support and look forward to their new initiatives next term.

Our BBC Children in Need fundraiser this year was a success, raising £756.81. Thanks to all participants and Team Pudsey supporters, especially the Sixth Form Leadership Team and Year 8 sales reps. Your efforts made a positive impact!
In honour of Anti-Bullying Week, we came together to celebrate Odd Socks Day, encouraging not only students but also our furry friends to participate! The response was fantastic, with numerous paw-some photos showcasing the spirit of unity. A heartfelt "Da iawn pawb!" to everyone who contributed to making this day a success.
This year, we have been fortunate to harvest honey from our Heolddu beehive in our own apiary. Mrs Howe and Mrs Poole worked with Lorne East of the Sirhowy Valley Honeybee Company on Friday, the 1st of September, to extract the honey from our hive and jar it ready for sale. We had enough honey to fill 58 jars this year and look forward to many more next year – sticky fingers crossed. The extracting process uses centrifugal force to ‘pull’ the honey down and out of the honeycomb into the extracting drum and into our honey bucket. Both Mrs Howe and I found it satisfying to see the fruits of our bees’ labour over the summer, dripping into the bucket so we could bring it back and measure it into jars in the catering class kitchen, under the watchful eye of Mrs Morris. We will soon be setting them up to rest over the winter and enjoy a long rest until springtime when they can do it all again next year.
Our honey will cost £4.50 per jar with a 50p refund to you when the empties are returned.
At Heolddu Comprehensive School, our curriculum roadmaps are customised educational plans to specify the learning goals, subjects, and skills to be covered over a defined period, ensuring a structured and coherent approach to education. These roadmaps are tailored to our school's unique needs and help both teachers and students understand the educational path they'll follow, maintaining consistency and alignment with our educational objectives.
Engaging in our diverse range of extracurricular activities at Heolddu Comprehensive School offers students a holistic educational experience. From targeted revision sessions to dynamic sports clubs, these activities foster not only academic excellence but also teamwork, leadership, and personal growth. We believe that participating in these extracurriculars enhances students' overall well-being and contributes to a well-rounded education.
Join us every day from 2:50 pm to 3:50 pm for the Homework Club at Heolddu Comprehensive School's Learning Resource Center (LRC)! It's a fantastic opportunity for students to work on assignments, get assistance, and enjoy complimentary squash and biscuits. Plus, for added convenience, there's a bus service available to take students home after the session. Don't miss out on this supportive and rewarding after-school initiative!
Our Berlin Expedition / Ein Alldaith i Berlin
Led by Mr. Silcox, our recent journey to Berlin from Heolddu Comprehensive School was a blend of historical immersion and cultural exploration. Departing from our school, the itinerary unfolded with poignant visits to Sachsenhausen Concentration Camp, Plotzensee Prison, and the iconic Reichstag. The following day, we engaged in a guided walking city tour, experiencing Berlin's landmarks like the European Jew Memorial and The Brandenburg Gate, followed by leisure exploration.
Our Deep Dive into Berlin's Complex History / Ein Plymio'n Ddwfn i Hanes Cymhleth Berlin
On Sunday there was a visit to the Topography of Terror Museum, we delved deep into Berlin's intricate past. The trip, marked by 70,000 steps and smiles, not only broadened our perspectives but also left an indelible mark, creating lasting memories of our educational adventure in the heart of history and culture.
Our recent London trip was a tailored experience for GCSE art students at Heolddu Comprehensive School. This trip was a mix of education and enjoyment, offering insights into Food and Drink brand development at the Museum of Brands. The strategic alignment with upcoming art projects allowed students to gather valuable primary research, enhancing their creative endeavours. The trip also included a magical visit to Winter Wonderland and a highlight at the 'Let Them Eat Fake' exhibition, sparking creativity for our students' projects. Overall, it was an excellent experience, leaving our students with cherished memories and a rich reservoir of inspiration.
On September 28th, a group of Year 9 pupils explored the vibrant entrepreneurial ecosystem at 'Welsh ICE' in Caerphilly Business Park. Guided by mentors Tom and Hope, the students delved into the world of startups, freelancers, and business strategies.
The day included engaging talks, practical exercises focusing on advertising and selling skills, and a tour of the Welsh ICE facilities. The students, fueled by Domino's Pizza, were challenged to generate entrepreneurial ideas. After thoughtful consideration, they honed in on an exciting venture - personalized, made-to-order water bottles.
This entrepreneurial journey continues every Monday at school, where the group discusses the business's next steps, from costs and budgeting to design features and overall strategy. The students are not just learning about entrepreneurship; they are actively shaping and launching their very own innovative businesses right at Heolddu. Stay tuned for updates on their exciting journey!
Students from Years 10, 11, and 12 recently embarked on an immersive journey to Oxford University (New College). This unique opportunity allowed our students to delve into the heart of Oxford, experiencing a tailored program designed to unveil the reality of Oxford University. The day's itinerary included a comprehensive tour of the college, insightful sessions on A-level options, and an engaging Q&A with current Welsh students at New College. Departing from the school bus bay at 7:15 am, the students returned at approximately 5:30 pm, with flexibility for an additional visit to iconic college landmarks like the Radcliffe Camera and the Bodleian Library. The trip was not only educational but also a source of inspiration, providing our students with a firsthand glimpse into the academic possibilities that await them.
On 26th September we celebrated the European Day of Languages. To mark the occasion, we arranged our annual food-tasting event at break time. Pupils had the opportunity to try a range of foods from around the world. On offer were pieces of bread, pastries, olives, exotic fruit, charcuterie and a selection of cheeses. The food was thoroughly enjoyed by both pupils and staff, however, the olives were an acquired taste! In language lessons, pupils also completed games and activities in different languages to test their linguistic knowledge. A huge ‘merci beaucoup !’ to Mrs Morris and all the staff who helped out on the day.
This term we have been lucky enough to be working with three mentors from Cardiff University. Our mentors have been working with year 9 and have offered workshops and mentoring sessions to discuss the importance and diversity of languages. They have covered topics such as music, accents, and dialects, as well as looking at the opportunities there are for students who wish to study languages at GCSE and beyond.
This term, pupils in years 7 and 8 had the opportunity to write pen pal letters to pupils in our link school, Collège Jean Monnet in Brittany, France. Pupils used their multilingual skills and wrote in French, English and Welsh. Pupils introduced themselves, gave information about tourist sites in Wales and wrote about St David’s Day. We are looking forward to receiving reply letters at the end of this term and will respond in the new year.
This term, year 7 French classes have had the chance to produce a piece of work based on an element of French culture. We have yet again been amazed by the creativity of our pupils, who have produced some very impressive pieces of work. We have received models of French landmarks, research projects on French history, painted canvases and much more. They have demonstrated a keen interest in an area of French culture and utilised their creative and research skills in a variety of ways. We would like to say 'Bon travail !' to all our year 7 learners for their enthusiasm and hard work.
At the end of last year, we opened Pupil Language Ambassador applications to year 9 pupils and we received several outstanding applications. After much deliberation, we have now chosen our nine Pupil Language Ambassadors for this year. Our Heolddu Pupil Language Ambassadors are Lukas Tamcken, Melissa Davies, Madison Davies, Lucy James, Julian Tang, Freya Barrett, Owen Roe, Thomas Chard and Kacie Price. Our Pupil Language Ambassadors help raise the profile of Welsh, French and other international languages around the school. They help plan and support language events and launch their own initiatives. They have already been helping us mark Diwrnod Shwmae and are currently making plans to celebrate the World Cup next half-term. We wish our pupil language ambassadors 'bonne chance' and 'pob lwc' with their future endeavours.
At Heolddu, we want to provide our Young Carers with rewards and fun things to do. This is to recognise their vital role as a Young Carer in their home. Often these pupils miss out due to financial constraints, and not being able to attend trips that are longer than the school day. On Tuesday 28th September the Young Carers attended a trip to Cwmcarn Scenic Drive without any cost to their families. We were very fortunate to receive funding from the Welsh Government's Outdoor Partnership Programme through AMSER and the Carer's Trust, to cover the full cost of the trip. The pupils spent the day orienteering and paddle boarding, but the most fun was had by them all when they were treated to toasted marshmallows over the fire! Some of the comments from the pupils were "It was ace", and, "It was brill, but the water was freezing, I couldn't feel my feet for most of it". "I can't wait for the next one". Mr Davies, who took them on their trip, said, "It was absolutely out of this world. All of the children participated, engaged well and thoroughly enjoyed the activities".
We are looking to run more trips of this kind in the future, so watch this space!
