Your child is coming to kindergarten! We are excited to welcome you to Rock Spring Elementary. Please use the activities below to help prepare your child for school.
Read a book with your child each day. Talk about the what is happening in the story and practice reading the pictures too.
Practice naming the alphabet letters and sounds. You can use magnet letters, puzzles, and had written letters to help your child learn capital and lowercase letters.
If your child know all of his/her letters then move on to the first list of high frequency words.
Have your child draw pictures of the characters and settings in books your child has read with you.
Coloring is a great way for children to learn to hold a writing utensil and to make it move in the way they want.
Use different writing supplies to practice writing his/her name. You can even do this with sidewalk chalk. Once children know and can write the letters of their name then move on to other alphabet letters.
Have your child draw a picture and then ask them to tell you a story that goes with the picture. As their telling the story you can ask them, "What happened next?" to help them keep their story going. Kindergarten students work on drawing and then writing stories with a beginning, middle and end.
Practice counting from 1-10, and then 1-20.
Practice counting by tens: 10, 20, 30...
Practice counting objects such as crayons, toys, & books. If your child has trouble counting one object at a time encourage him or her to pick up the object or point as they are counting.
Talk with your child about the names of shapes and have them find objects in your house that are that shape.
Have children sort objects into lines to practice counting and graphing.
Use playing cards to practice counting!
Children at this age learn so much through play. Make learning to count, shapes, and sorting fun. When they make mistakes, encourage them to keep trying.
