You are on your way to 2nd grade and now the "Big kids" on the front hall! Your 2nd grade teachers cannot wait to see you next year. Please use the educational activities below to help your child continue to grow over the summer.
Have your child read a book for 20-30 minutes each day. You can find digital books on his or her reading level through EPIC and Sora. The links are on the second page of the reading challenge.
When your child knows his or her high frequency words, it makes reading comprehension easier. To review words from 1st grade click on this list. To begin working on 2nd grade words use this list.
Headsprout is a phonics program that was purchased by Rock Spring Elementary. If your child was enrolled during the 219-2020 school year he or she should have an account. Contact your child's previous teacher for login information.
Writing is an important skill for second graders. The best way to help your child become a better writer is to encourage him or her to write everyday. You may want to give them a summer writing journal or keep a folder of what they have written. Then at the end of the summer you can go back and look at what they have written.
You can let them pick what they write about or use the Summer Writing Challenge ideas. Children can also draw pictures and write about their picture. Providing children with a choice in what they are writing will help motivate them. If they love superheros, unicorns, or space have them write about something they love and know a lot about.
Your child learned a lot of phonics skills that will help them sound out words to determine spelling. If they ask you to spell words with a short vowel or simple long vowel words, ask them to sound the word out and write down each sound that they hear. My students also kept a list more difficult works in the back of their writing journals, and you may decide this is a strategy that you would like to use with your child as well.
There a lots of games and hands on activities to help make math fun for your 2nd grader. Use the links and PDFs on this page to find some exciting ways to practice the skills your child has learned over the last year. Your child can also log into the Henry County Schools math resources over the summer. Directions for logging into HMH are provided below.
If you have dominoes at home, your child can use them to practice adding and subtracting. It doesn't have to be fancy. You can have them add the two numbers together and then sort them by the sum (total).
My students loved learning their facts with different card games. Learning the numbers that add together to make 10 is an important skill for children to learn. If you have playing cards or Uno at home you can use them to help your child build this skill.
