What's going on in class

2022-2023

Week 1

Band classes are learning how to use and navigate: Infinite Campus , Google Classroom, Ms. Miller's Google Site, Classlinks, Office 365 for email, how to type/send/respond to an email. We are also going over our syllabus and MSB for rentals. Band students will learn how to work FlipGrid. We will also go over Miller Warmups and scales/rudiments.

Week of March 8

Band classes will continue blended rehearsals and music theory/ aural skills #7. Remote participation grades will continue.

Music Appreciation classes will start composing on SoundTrap and complete L J #7.


Week of March 1

Band classes will resume blended rehearsal with songs on GC and/or SmartMusic and our virtual recording music. We continued on to unit #6 in music theory/aural skills. Remote students will be assigned one day to have cameras on for band participate points. We finished our latest extra credit and students completed a survey on our May 4 spring concert.

Music Appreciation classes will finish our percussion instruments, complete their percussion project, and L J #6. We will begin our next unit - elements of music along with being introduced to DAW SoundTrap.


Week of Feb 22

Band classes will begin blended rehearsal with songs on GC or SmartMusic including our virtual recording music. We continued on to unit #5 in music theory/aural skills. We talked about FADS, May 4 spring concert, and 2 opportunities for extra credit!

Music Appreciation classes will start learning about percussion instruments. We completed L J #5.


Week of Feb 15

WINTER BREAK


Week of Feb 8

Band students will continue working on music with playing tests on specific sections. We also completed unit #4 of music theory/aural skills.

Music Appreciation will finish up brass instruments and move on to percussion instruments and L J #4.

Feb 12 is a teacher work day.


Week of Feb 1

Band students will return to working on SmartMusic as well as parts for our virtual recording. We completed unit #3 of music theory / aural skills.

Music Appreciation will begin talking about Brass instruments and L J #3.


Week of January 25

Band students will continue music theory / aural skills unit #2 and complete our podcast music. We also took class pictures for yearbook.

Music Appreciation will finish woodwind instruments and Woodwind project and L J #2 due.

January 29 is a teacher work-day. Students will not report to school.

Week of January 18

Band students will continue working in music theory, aural skills, podcast compositions.

Music Appreciation will finish stringed instruments and move on to woodwind instruments. String project due. Listening Journals are introduced and L J #1 due.

Ms. Miller will be out 3rd and 4th block on January 20 - make sure to check GC for attendance and assignments.


Beginning of S2 - Week of January 11 - FULLY REMOTE

Band students will review all ways to submit work using: Infinite Campus, how to send an email in Office365, Google Classroom, FlipGrid, and SmartMusic. We will review our goals for this quarter / semester as well as the syllabus. Students will be introduced to Music Theory, Aural Skills, Elements of Music, SoundTrap, and Flat I.O. All State videos are due January 10th.

Music Appreciation will review how to use Infinite Campus, check and send an email in Office 365, Google Classroom, and FlipGrid. We will begin Unit 1 - orchestra and band instruments.


Week of Dec 14

In-person students returned to school.

FINALS WEEK


Week of Dec 7

Band students continued working on holiday music this week. Playing test on a song of their choice due Dec 11.

Music Appreciation completed Movie Composer project #1 and L J #15. Finals in music appreciation were discussed.


Week of Nov 30

All band students took Monday for "Monday maintenance" on their instrument. Students received new scale sheets and continued working on music. All students began holiday music on Dec 3. Canned goods are being collected for Helping in His Name Ministries. All late work from November due Dec 2. Finals in band were discussed on Dec 2.

Music Appreciation completed L J #14 and started their next unit on Movie Composers. We studied John Williams, Hans Zimmer, and Danny Elfman. All late work from November due Dec 2.

Students began EOCs/fully remote status on Dec 3 and will continue through Dec 11.


Week of Nov 23

THANKSGIVING BREAK


Week of Nov 16

Band students had a test on the Concert Ab scale. Work continued on music both in class and on SmartMusic (remote).

Music Appreciation was introduced to how emotions and music go together and how the music can effect a movie scene. We started and completed SoundTrap project #2.


Week of Nov 9

In person students had a playing test on Denbridge Way and also reviewed Four, a Beethoven tribute piece. All State discussion took place during ADV on Friday and can also be found on any GC stream. Remote students completed a recording on SmartMusic by Nov 6. Congrats to our STATE FINALISTS for Governors Honors: Connor Biffle (trombone), Savannah McDowell (tenor saxophone) and Walker Mudd (trumpet).

Music Appreciation class was introduced to Dr. Edwards of Roaring Records and tutorial videos on SoundTrap available on YouTube. We created a ringtone (loop) and were also introduced to how to save our work as a different name, how to insert loops, how to insert instruments/add a new track, how to create a drum kit part via sequences, what measures are in music, how to edit 1 line to extend or cut/paste, what stop time in music is, how to record a melody, how to export as an mp3 to GC, and how to change metronome settings that impact the tempo in music. We started and complete SoundTrap project #1. Also worked on Listening Journal #12.


Week of Nov 2

In person students picked another piece to study on SmartMusic. Remote students continued working on FOUR and also received Florentiner March. More discussion took place on All State Band / Orchestra. Our Governor's Honors Nominees performed in class.

Music Appreciation are continuing training in SoundTrap as well as Listening Journal #11.


Week of Oct 26

In-person students are practicing Denbridge Way for a playing test next week. Remote students continue to work on SmartMusic.

Music Appreciation started Elements of Music study and also has started SoundTrap online-software. We created accounts this week and got introduced to the different options available to students. Also worked on Listening Journal #10.


Week of Oct 19

In-person students are practicing ensemble music while remote are learning more songs on SmartMusic - Jupiter from The Planets, Dies Irae, and In The Hall of the Mountain King. Concert Eb scale is due on FlipGrid for Friday.

Music Appreciation finish their study on all instruments with a percussion instrument project and also LJ#9. We will begin our new unit on Elements of Music and use the SoundTrap free music-making website to create our own MP3s. Extra credit opportunities were also mentioned in class.


Week of Oct 12

Bands had "Eye of the Tiger" on SmartMusic due.

Music Appreciation started talking about percussion instruments and also LJ#8 this week.


Week of Oct 5

Band classes are practicing "Eye of the Tiger" as well as Concert Bb scale. Flipgrid on Concert Bb due Friday.

Music Appreciation finish their study on brass instruments, complete a Brass Project Thursday, and LJ#6 on Friday.

Friday is a 1/2 day and ADVISORY does not meet that day.


Week of Sept 28

Band classes are enrolling in SmartMusic and navigating through music and options.

GHP nominees were announced.

Music Appreciation begin their study on brass instruments and complete Listening Journal #1.6.

Ms. Miller was unavailable on Wednesday so Friday was used as a makeup day.



Week of Sept 21

Fall Break 2020


Week of Sept 14

Band classes are finishing up The Dark Knight and have a FlipGrid assignment on that music. We will be introducing SmartMusic on Thursday.

Music Appreciation will finish up our study on woodwinds, have a woodwind google slide assignment, and Listening Journal #5 this week.


Week of Sept 7

Band class have a playing test on The Avengers music. They may play along with the professional recording OR use a metronome to go at their own pace. Playing tests are submitted on FlipGrid. Band class also began learning music from The Dark Knight.

Music Appreciation begins learning about woodwind instruments and completes Listening Journal #4.

All students 10-12th signed up for Advisory this week. Advisory will begin Sept 28 (no matter if in-person or remote).

All students had their 4 1/2 week term average posted to Infinite Campus. Calls and/or emails will be made to students currently failing any class.

Information regarding instrument repairs was sent in Google Classroom. Please contact Ms. Miller if you have questions or need to schedule a repair.


Week of August 31

Band classes are discussing how to tune their instrument, how to navigate MusicTheory.net and use it as a tool, different advisory options, and learning The Avengers music. Reminders about paying marching band fee #1 as well as rental fees.

Music Appreciation - finishing our stringed instruments unit, google slide presentation on either violin, viola, cello, or bass. We have also started our woodwind unit and completing Listening Journal #3.


Week of August 24:

Band classes - accessing fingering charts (book or online), discussing tuner and metronome apps, long tones/lip slurs, seniors and/or principal players will be involved in making videos for 6th graders on the different instruments to help with beginning band, discussing the Fine Arts Diploma Seal in detail for those interested, how to access music on JWPepper website with school log-in.

Week of Aug 16:

Band classes are learning how to use and navigate: Infinite Campus attendance, Google Classroom, Ms. Miller's Google Cite, Classlinks, Office 365 for email, how to type/send/respond to an email. We are also going over our syllabus and MSB for rentals, show shirts, and marching band payments. Band students are learning how to record and submit work on FlipGrid. Instrument pick up on Aug 20 and Aug 21.
