Course Description:

Welcome to 7th Grade Band! This course continues to build upon the foundational skills developed in 6th grade, focusing on refining instrumental technique, expanding musical vocabulary, and developing ensemble awareness. Students will explore a wider range of musical styles and concepts, preparing them for advanced musical experiences.

Course Objectives:

Upon successful completion of this course, students will be able to:

• Demonstrate increased proficiency in instrumental technique and tone production.

• Accurately interpret and perform more complex musical notation and rhythms.

• Demonstrate understanding of basic music theory concepts.

• Perform assigned music with increased musical expression and accuracy.

• Contribute effectively to ensemble performances through active listening and collaboration.

• Maintain consistent practice habits and demonstrate self-discipline.

Required Materials:

• Instrument (Students are expected to maintain their own instrument in good working condition.)

• Music book(s) (provided by the school).

• Pencil.

• Music folder or binder.

• Instrument-specific supplies:

  • Woodwinds: Reeds, mouthpiece, cork grease (if applicable).

  • Brass: Valve oil or slide cream, mouthpiece.

  • Percussion: Drumsticks, mallets (as required).

Practice Expectations:

• Regular and focused practice is crucial for continued musical development. Students are expected to practice a minimum of 45 minutes, 4-5 times per week.

• Students will be encouraged to develop effective practice strategies and set personal musical goals.

Classroom Expectations:

• Students will demonstrate respect towards the instructor, fellow students, and school property.

• Active participation in rehearsals and class activities is essential.

• Students will adhere to all school policies regarding conduct and behavior.

• Electronic devices are prohibited during class unless explicitly authorized by the instructor.

• Students will arrive to class on time and prepared with all necessary materials.

Performance Requirements:

• Students are required to participate in all scheduled performances.

• Performances are a significant component of the course grade.

• Students will wear the designated band polo for all performances.

• Absences from performances must be communicated to the instructor with appropriate documentation.

• Some students may be given the opportunity to march with the high school band in the spring semester after LGPE.

Grading Policy:

Student grades will be determined based on the following criteria:

• Class Participation: 25% (Active engagement in rehearsals and class activities.)

• Practice/Homework: 20% (Completion of assigned practice logs and written assignments.)

• Playing Tests: 20% (Demonstration of individual playing proficiency and musicality.)

• Quizzes: 10% (Assessment of music theory and knowledge.)

• Concerts: 20% (Performance quality and attendance.)

• Final Exam: 5%

Attendance and Punctuality:

• Regular attendance is crucial for the success of the ensemble.

• Students are expected to arrive to class on time and prepared.

• Absences must be accompanied by a written excuse from a parent or guardian.

Important Considerations:

• Students are encouraged to ask questions and seek assistance when needed.

• A positive and supportive learning environment is essential for musical growth.

• Students will be encouraged to take on leadership roles within the ensemble.

• Consistent effort, dedication, and a positive attitude will contribute to a rewarding musical experience.
