Course Description:
Welcome to 6th Grade Band! This introductory course is designed to provide students with a comprehensive foundation in instrumental music. Students will learn the fundamentals of music theory, instrument technique, and ensemble performance. This course emphasizes the development of essential musical skills, fostering a lifelong appreciation for music.
Course Objectives:
Upon successful completion of this course, students will be able to:
Demonstrate proper instrument assembly, maintenance, and care.
Produce a characteristic tone on their chosen instrument.
Read and interpret basic musical notation and rhythms.
Perform assigned music accurately and expressively.
Collaborate effectively within an ensemble setting.
Demonstrate consistent practice habits.
Required Materials:
Instrument (Students are expected to acquire their own instrument; please consult with Mr. Sharpe regarding instrument selection.)
Music book.
Pencil.
Music folder or binder.
Instrument-specific supplies:
Woodwinds: Reeds, mouthpiece, cork grease (if applicable).
Brass: Valve oil or slide cream, mouthpiece.
Percussion: Drumsticks.
Practice Expectations:
Regular practice is essential for musical development. Students are expected to practice a minimum of 30 minutes, 3-4 times per week.
Consistent practice will contribute to individual progress and overall ensemble performance.
Classroom Expectations:
Students will demonstrate respect towards the instructor, fellow students, and school property.
Students will actively participate in all class activities and rehearsals.
Students will adhere to all school policies regarding conduct and behavior.
Electronic devices are prohibited during class unless explicitly authorized by the instructor.
Students will arrive to class on time and prepared with all necessary materials.
Performance Requirements:
Students are required to participate in all scheduled performances.
Performances are considered a significant component of the course grade.
Students will wear the designated band polo for all performances.
Absences from performances must be communicated to the instructor with appropriate documentation.
Grading Policy:
Student grades will be determined based on the following criteria:
Class Participation: 25% (Active engagement in rehearsals and class activities.)
Practice/Homework: 20% (Completion of assigned practice logs and written assignments.)
Playing Tests: 20% (Demonstration of individual playing proficiency.)
Quizzes: 10% (Assessment of music theory and knowledge.)
Concerts: 20% (Performance quality and attendance.)
Final Exam: 5%
Attendance and Punctuality:
Regular attendance is crucial for the success of the ensemble.
Students are expected to arrive to class on time and prepared.
Absences must be accompanied by a written excuse from a parent or guardian.
