While many organizations categorize trauma as an event or series of events, it is much more accurate to recognize that trauma is not the event itself, but rather the response to the event or events. These experiences can be real or perceived. Anyone exposed to traumatic events has subjective reactions including changes in feelings, thoughts, and physiological responses as well as the concern for the safety of others. For children, especially, these reactions can be complex because they don’t have the skills, experience, or vocabulary to process their feelings so they are left feeling guilty, confused, or even angry.
