I teach about Chinese New Year because it provides an opportunity for me to connect with students on a personal level. My daughters are adopted from China. As a family, Chinese culture is an important part of our lives.
Chinese New Year is a significant cultural tradition from a diverse part of the world. It fosters an understanding and appreciation for different cultures. It promotes global awareness and allows students to explore customs like family reunions, symbolic foods and the Chinese Zodiac.

Interactive Smart Panel - Wilson Just Words Program
Students drill sounds to reinforce the individual letter sounds, digraphs and welded sounds. The student taps a card two to hear the letters, key word and sound. All of the students then repeat the letters, the key word and the sound. Shown in the picture, certain sounds can be chosen for individual students to practice. This can also target practice of certain sounds for individual students.

Students echo sounds by dragging and dropping the letter/s that match the sound that is read aloud. They must drag and drop the different spellings for each sound. This can be used to target sounds when individual students need further practice.

Google Sheets - Benchmarking Data
Students' reading is benchmarked three times per year. Google Sheets allows the student scores to to be compared throughout the year. Student growth is displayed as the year progresses.
Google Forms- Comprehension Check
A sample assignment on Google Forms. The students independently read an article on the history of Toys R' Us. They then completed the Google Form to check comprehension.
