Dartmouth Middle School is located in Hemet, California. The school serves a student body of more than 1,100+ students. The instrumental music program includes two Beginning Bands, two Intermediate Bands, an Advanced Band, and a Jazz Band. The program consists of about 150+ incredibly talented students, and is well supported by the school's administration, the Hemet Unified School District, parent volunteers, and the local community. The Dartmouth Bands perform regularly throughout the year at traditional school functions, joint concerts with Hemet High School, music festivals and clinics, and events in the community, including the annual Hemet Christmas Parade. Students in the Dartmouth Band program have the opportunity to work with guest conductors, master clinicians, and professional musicians.
Cadet Band
(Beginning Band) is a class for incoming students with limited, or no previous musical experience on a woodwind, brass, or percussion instrument. Instruction provided in this class focuses on building a students knowledge of basic music theory, note reading competency, rhythmic development, tempo, and an understanding of coordination and tone production on their chosen instrument. The class is offered to all 6th, 7th, and 8th grade students who have an interest in learning an instrument and music.
Concert Band
Concert Band is a second-year intermediate-level class divided into two separate classes; one woodwind class and the other class consisting of brass and percussion. Class instruction focuses on the continued development of each instrument, emphasizing performance techniques related to the specific instrumentation. Students develop a deeper understanding of notation, rhythm, scales, historical significance, and stylistic interpretation of selected music. Placement in this class is based on an audition with the band director.
Symphonic Band
Symphonic Band is the advanced instrumental ensemble at Dartmouth Middle School. Placement for this class is strictly through audition and permission from the director. This class emphasizes the continued development of technique, musicianship, and advanced performance practices. Students in this class demonstrate the highest level of performance in the music program.
Jazz Band
Jazz Band consists of the most talented saxophone, trumpet, trombone, and percussion musicians in the Dartmouth music program. Placement in this class is limited to select instrumentation, and students learn a wide variety of musical styles within the jazz repertoire. Students in this ensemble have the opportunity to collaborate with some of the best professional jazz musicians in the region, gaining real world performance experience.
