First grade is a busy year and we have lots to learn to continue to set the foundation for your child's education! I will send extra practice pages and a monthly homework challenges page home with your child in their Thursday Folders. Additional practice is always encouraged, but there is no due date on this work, unless stated otherwise. All of these items are supplied to support your student's understanding. If there is homework that your student is excited about, please send me a picture on Class Dojo and I would love to celebrate with them!
I always encourage reading at home together at least 10-15 minutes a night. Listening to a fluent reader is so beneficial for your little reader! As the school year progresses, I will send home Read Well reading passages in your child's Thursday folder that I recommend you review daily to advance your child's reading skills. Keep these reading passages at home and continue to practice reading them.
Suggested additional home activities that will benefit your child's academic performance:
Read books with your child. Talk about the author, the characters, make predictions, and practice re-telling the story.
Go for a walk and play "I Spy."
Ask your child about the best and hardest parts of their day. How did they work to overcome any challenges?
Eat dinner as a family.
Go to bed early to get a good night's sleep.
Talk about what it means to be a good friend and model good behavior.
Encourage your child to do things that are hard for them because that is how our brain grows.
Play outside.
Practice an instrument.
Practice handwriting of letters, numbers, and your child's name if it needs more work.
Use your imagination! You know your child best.
Your support and involvement in your child's education is greatly appreciated!
Grading: Our Report Card is a standards-based report card. It includes Common Core standards that we teach in first grade. Throughout the year you will be able to see your student's progress towards understanding these standards. Your child will grow so much this year!Â
